Internship Description/Learning Objectives:

 

Over the past 17 years, Southern Word has developed leading young writers and music producers through its school and out-of-school programs. During the summer, Southern Word will bring this writing and music community together through POWER Youth. Southern Word will hire 15-person youth to create and distribute collaborative writing and music projects over the course of the summer. In addition to building skills as artists, Southern Word will teach youth the tools to manage projects and market the material that they produce in a way that develops transferable skills for any career path. This will take the form of distribution of recorded music through the internet as well as live open mics and performances. Youth will also receive an introduction to the different facets of running a successful education arts non-profit by rotating through exposure sessions with Southern Word’s administrators.

 

This program is for youth ages 14-15. Youth who participate can miss a maximum 5 workdays during the program and must attend New Hire Orientation in Spring 2026 with a parent or legal guardian.

Job Duties:

 

•        Collaborate with peers to create music, lyrical, and poetic content. 

•        Plan and execute distribution of products. 

•        Present and perform pieces at showcases.

Preferred Competencies:

 

•        Preferred youth will have a serious interest in music, songwriting, spoken word poetry, and/or music marketing. 

•        Must have a positive attitude, team player mentality, and willingness to perform their work for others.

Monday – Friday; 9:30-2:00pm  

(30-minute unpaid lunch break included in day)

The full program is June 1st – July 17th   

June 1st – June 3rd:        Interns attend assigned worksite for scheduled times.

June 4th:                         POWER Youth Summit at Sheraton Music City Nashville Airport

June 5th – July 17th:       Team Members on site at their agencies on Monday-Friday at the time 

            scheduled by employer.  You will be scheduled to work 4 hours daily

            which equals 20 hours per week.

July 13th – July 17th:      POWER Youth Summer Employment Program - End of Summer

            Celebration – Team Members can showcase their projects from the 

            summer.             

If you are selected as an Experience Work Team Member, you will make $12.00 an hour and receive a summer program with project-based employment for youth ages 14 -15.

Experience Work projects can be focused on the arts, leadership skills or community development. In addition, you will learn “work ready” skills for future employment. There are opportunities to intern in many areas of Nashville, so please select the opportunity based on your access to transportation.


The POWER Youth program, previously known as Opportunity NOW, provides career exploration and work experience activities for youth 14 to 24 years old. The name POWER Youth was selected by the peer youth leadership team based on how they view themselves and their future.
