East Nashville Hope Exchange (ENHE) is a literacy-focused nonprofit dedicated to strengthening reading skills and increasing family engagement for K–5 students in Nashville. For over 20 years, ENHE has provided a six-week Summer Literacy Program, year-round tutoring, and family engagement workshops designed to build confident readers and empowered communities.

Youth Intern - Classroom Assistant

Internship Description/Learning Objectives:

 

The Youth Intern will serve as a Classroom Assistant in ENHE’s six-week Summer Literacy Program, supporting teachers and students in daily academic and enrichment activities. Interns will learn essential workplace skills, including professionalism, communication, leadership, teamwork, and child engagement strategies. By the end of the internship, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate reliable workplace habits including punctuality, teamwork, and following directions

     
  • Support student engagement using positive reinforcement and classroom routines

     
  • Assist with literacy instruction such as reading groups, writing activities, and word work

     
  • Facilitate small-group activities with guidance from the classroom teacher

     
  • Organize materials, prepare learning spaces, and maintain a positive learning environment

     
  • Develop leadership skills and reflect on personal and professional growth

     

Job Duties:

 

  • Assist with student arrival, classroom setup, and daily routines

     
  • Support teachers during literacy blocks, enrichment activities, and small groups

     
  • Encourage students and help redirect behavior using positive strategies

     
  • Organize books, journals, manipulatives, and classroom materials

     
  • Help students with reading, writing, and hands-on academic activities

     
  • Lead or co-lead small group learning tasks under supervision

     
  • Support enrichment events and special classroom activities

     
  • Assist with transitions, cleanup, and end-of-day organization

     
  • Participate in end-of-summer classroom breakdown, packing, and inventory

     
  • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and safety at all times

General Information:

Work Schedule Days and Hours:

 

Monday–Thursday, 8 a.m. – 2:30p.m. 
6.5 hours per day (24 hours per week)

Dress Code:

 

Casual-professional and school-appropriate attire. Closed-toe shoes recommended. No crop tops, short shorts, or clothing with inappropriate graphics or language.

Physical Requirements:

 

Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move during classroom transitions

 

Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. (classroom materials, boxes during breakdown)

 

Ability to engage actively with young children

Working Conditions: (example: Office Warehouse, Outdoors, with Children or Animals, etc.)

 

  • In-person, indoor classroom environment

The full program is June 1st – July 17th  

June 1st – June 3rd:    Interns attend work readiness skills training from 8am – 12pm.

June 4th:                      Attend employer orientation meeting.

June 5th:                      POWER Youth Summit at Sheraton Music City Nashville Airport

June 8th – July 17th:   Youth will report to their employer worksite location on Monday – 

                                       Thursday or special schedule workday at the time 

                                        scheduled by employer.  You will be scheduled to work 6.5 hours daily

                                     which equals 24 hours per week.

 

Friday Co-Horts:             Youth report to cohort sessions at assigned locations at 8:00am to 

12:00noon on Fridays.

If you are selected as a High School Intern, you will make $15.00 an hour and receive pre-program training and coaching to ensure you have the skills you need on the job. Interns are responsible for providing their own transportation to all orientation, training, worksite, and cohort times. Please consider your transportation needs prior to applying for the High School Internship program. The POWER Youth program, previously known as Opportunity NOW, provides career exploration and work experience activities for youth 14 to 24 years old. The name POWER Youth was selected by the peer youth leadership team based on how they view themselves and their future.
