Internship Title: 

 

Food Service & Business Operations Intern

Internship Description/Learning Objectives:

 

This internship provides high school students with hands-on experience in entrepreneurship, food service operations, and small business management. Interns will first learn the fundamentals of business ownership, including how a restaurant and food truck operate day-to-day.

 

Students will be introduced to:

  • How a real small business is built and managed
  • The structure and operations of IT’Z A Philly Thing
  • Customer service and hospitality standards
  • Food safety, cleanliness, and teamwork

 

After training, interns will support daily operations at the restaurant and food truck while continuing to learn practical business skills.

 

Note: Interns will receive mentorship from the business owner and leadership team, with a focus on work readiness, professionalism, entrepreneurship, and transferable life skills.

Job Duties:

 

Interns may assist in the following areas under supervision:

 

  • Food prep for restaurant and events
  • Assisting line cooks during service
  • Front-of-house support (passing out orders, customer interaction)
  • Making and serving Philly Water Ice
  • Assisting with food truck setup and breakdown at events
  • Dishwashing and maintaining cleanliness
  • General cleaning and organization
  • Supporting event and catering preparation

 

Duties may rotate to expose interns to multiple aspects of the business.

General Information:

Work Schedule Days and Hours:

 

  • Monday – Thursday only 10:00am-4:30pm
  • Up to 24 hours per week
  • Maximum 6.5 hours per day (includes a 30-minute unpaid break, 6 hours of work)

Dress Code:

 

  • Company-issued IT’Z A Philly Thing shirt
  • Closed-toe, slip-resistant shoes
  • Black Pants or shorts appropriate for food service
  • Hair restraints required (hat or hairnet)
  • Clean, professional appearance at all times

Travel Required:

 

  • Local travel only within Nashville
  • May include travel to food truck events or catering locations as scheduled

Physical Requirements:

 

  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 25–40 lbs. with assistance if needed
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced food service environment
  • Repetitive motions such as prepping food, cleaning, and assembling orders

Working Conditions: (example: Office Warehouse, Outdoors, with Children or Animals, etc.)

The full program is June 1st – July 17th  

June 1st – June 3rd:    Interns attend work readiness skills training from 8am – 12pm.

June 4th:                      Attend employer orientation meeting.

June 5th:                      POWER Youth Summit at Sheraton Music City Nashville Airport

June 8th – July 17th:   Youth will report to their employer worksite location on Monday – 

                                       Thursday or special schedule workday at the time 

                                        scheduled by employer.  You will be scheduled to work 6.5 hours daily

                                     which equals 24 hours per week.

 

Friday Co-Horts:            Youth report to cohort sessions at assigned locations at 8:00am to 

12:00noon on Fridays.

If you are selected as a High School Intern, you will make $15.00 an hour and receive pre-program training and coaching to ensure you have the skills you need on the job. Interns are responsible for providing their own transportation to all orientation, training, worksite, and cohort times. Please consider your transportation needs prior to applying for the High School Internship program. The POWER Youth program, previously known as Opportunity NOW, provides career exploration and work experience activities for youth 14 to 24 years old. The name POWER Youth was selected by the peer youth leadership team based on how they view themselves and their future.
