The Nurse Manager (RN) is a professional who is primarily responsible for providing continual clinical and administrative direction for a specific patient care unit on a 24-hour basis. The Nurse Manager is also responsible for the recommendation, development and implementation of policies and procedures for the patient care unit, as well as the evaluation of the delivery of care.  Â

Key Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership
• Serves as the lead for day-to-day activities across the Medical-Surgical, Telemetry, andÂ
Forensics units, ensuring smooth and coordinated operations on a 24-hour basis.
• Provides direct oversight of charge nurses, ensuring they stay on top of their responsibilitiesÂ
and effectively direct and support floor nursing staff.
• Facilitates the work of floor nurses in caring for patients, including coordination and preparationÂ
for procedures, blood transfusions, and other routine medical-surgical activities that requireÂ
nursing oversight.
• Monitors patient flow, acuity, and unit throughput, intervening as needed to maintain safe andÂ
efficient care delivery, informing house supervisors of throughput issues.
• Manages all other normal medical-surgical nurse manager day-to-day operations, includingÂ
rounding, problem-solving, and escalation of clinical and operational issues.
Daily Operations & Staffing
• Work collaboratively with the Clinical Staffing Coordinator and House Supervisor to ensure allÂ
three units are adequately covered.
• Provides break relief coverage for nursing staff to ensure continuity of patient care andÂ
appropriate unit coverage at all times.
• Recommends sufficient numbers of qualified and competent personnel and adjusts staffing toÂ
meet patient care needs across all three units to meet census.
• Manages day-to-day staffing variables, including overtime and addressing low-censusÂ
scenarios in accordance with applicable rules and hospital policy.
• Participates in a rotating/shared weekend on-call schedule, serving as the responsible leaderÂ
for operational and clinical issues during assigned weekend coverage.
Unit-Specific Oversight
• Provides oversight of the Forensics unit, ensuring care is delivered in a manner consistent withÂ
the unit’s security, custody, and safety requirements in coordination with applicable staff andÂ
protocols.
• Ensures Telemetry monitoring standards and Medical-Surgical care standards are consistentlyÂ
met across the respective units.
Performance Management & Development
• Leads staff development, performance evaluations, and coaching, fostering accountability,Â
teamwork, and professional growth at the individual and unit level.
• Manages the counseling and disciplinary process for unit staff in accordance with hospitalÂ
policy and applicable labor agreements.
• Enforces hospital policies and standards of conduct at the unit level, holding staff accountableÂ
while supporting their success.
• Serves as a role model and leader, providing professional development and mentorship toÂ
nursing staff.
Quality & Compliance
• Supports frontline quality improvement initiatives and maintains continuous survey readiness atÂ
the unit level, including Tennessee state standards and Joint Commission requirements.
• Collaborates on policy enforcement, interdisciplinary coordination, and unit-level regulatoryÂ
readiness and reporting.
• Promotes equitable, patient-centered care consistent with the hospital’s mission and goals.
Resources & Escalation
• Maintains adequate supply and equipment levels to support safe and effective unit operations.
• Escalates clinical, operational, and personnel issues through appropriate hospital channels andÂ
maintains records in accordance with HR policies.
• Maintains unit standards for cleanliness and organization.
Education
Degree/Diploma Program of Study Required / Preferred
Bachelors Nursing Required

Master’s in Nursing Preferred
