Jr. Community Service Advocate

Internship Description/Learning Objectives:

 

Youth Community Service Advocates support hands-on service projects for vulnerable children, isolated older adults, and HUD-supported communities across Nashville. They assist with educational activities, summer camp programming, light household tasks, social activities, and preparation for citywide volunteer projects, while also providing basic administrative support. Interns will gain valuable skills in non-profit operations, community service, and leadership while making a tangible impact through hands-on involvement in various service initiatives.

 

Job Duties:

 

● Older Adult Support & Engagement: Provide companionship and practical assistance to isolated older adults, including hosting social activities, offering light household or outdoor help, and supporting relationship-building. 

 

● Early Childhood Enrichment: Facilitate simple reading, educational, and enrichment activities for preschool-aged children, engaging youth from diverse cultural backgrounds with developmentally and culturally responsive approaches. 

 

● Summer Camp Preparation & Facilitation: Collaborate with the team to plan activities, prepare supplies, and organize logistics for a one-week summer camp, then help lead daily camp operations, recreation stations, and children’s programming. 

 

● Community Service & Volunteer Operations: Prepare supply kits, organize materials, and support nonprofit outreach, while assisting with daily cleaning and operational tasks that strengthen community volunteer projects and build teamwork and reliability. 

 

Reflection & Showcase: Participate in weekly reflection activities and prepare for a final showcase performance to present their summer’s work and growth.

Work Schedule Days and Hours:

 

Tuesday through Friday - 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or 20 hours a week.

 

Dress Code:

 

Uniform shirts will be provided. Appropriate length shorts or pants are permitted. Closed toe shoes are required.

Physical Requirements:

 

Lifting up to 20 Pounds: The intern may be required to lift, carry, or move supplies and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds during community service projects.

 

Working Conditions: (example: Office Warehouse, Outdoors, with Children or Animals, etc.)

 

Work Environment: Primarily indoors and outdoors, including community service sites. 

 

Outdoor Work: Will work outside in various weather conditions, including heat. 

 

Physical Demands: Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds and stand or walk for extended periods. 

 

Supervision: Always under adult supervision, though not necessarily present in every location.

 

 

The full program is June 1st – July 17th   

June 1st – June 3rd:        Interns attend assigned worksite for scheduled times.

June 4th:                         POWER Youth Summit at Sheraton Music City Nashville Airport

June 5th – July 17th:       Team Members on site at their agencies on Monday-Friday at the time 

            scheduled by employer.  You will be scheduled to work 4 hours daily

            which equals 20 hours per week.

July 13th – July 17th:      POWER Youth Summer Employment Program - End of Summer

            Celebration – Team Members can showcase their projects from the 

            summer.             

If you are selected as an Experience Work Team Member, you will make $12.00 an hour and receive a summer program with project-based employment for youth ages 14 -15.

Experience Work projects can be focused on the arts, leadership skills or community development. In addition, you will learn “work ready” skills for future employment. There are opportunities to intern in many areas of Nashville, so please select the opportunity based on your access to transportation.


The POWER Youth program, previously known as Opportunity NOW, provides career exploration and work experience activities for youth 14 to 24 years old. The name POWER Youth was selected by the peer youth leadership team based on how they view themselves and their future.
