Position Overview: 

The Environmental Engineer/Specialist – Air Compliance, Monitoring & Reporting is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining air quality compliance programs for an integrated taconite mining, concentrating, and pelletizing facility. This position ensures compliance with federal, state, and local air quality regulations, permit conditions, monitoring requirements, and reporting obligations applicable to mining, material handling, fuel combustion, pellet induration, and associated support operations.

The position serves as the facility's technical lead for emissions inventory management, continuous compliance demonstrations, source testing, monitoring systems, fugitive dust control, and regulatory reporting. The Environmental Engineer/Specialist works closely with operations, maintenance, and engineering to ensure compliance with Title V Air Permit requirements, New Source Review (NSR) permit conditions, Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) requirements, MACT standards, New Source Performance Standards (NSPS), and Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Environmental Manager, the Environmental Engineer/Specialist will be responsible for the following:
  • Assist in establishment and implementation of air monitoring programs required by permits and regulations.
  • Maintain compliance demonstration records for emissions limitations, operating restrictions, and Best Available Control Technology (BACT) requirements.
  • Oversee monitoring systems, data acquisition systems, process monitoring instrumentation, and associated recordkeeping.
  • Review operational data and monitoring results to identify potential compliance concerns.
  • Develop corrective actions for monitoring deviations and permit exceedances.
  • Prepare and submit required regulatory reports.
  • Provide technical support for environmental analyses and assessments in support of permitting and regulatory processes.
  • Engage with environmental agencies for inspections, and audits.
  • Provide guidance and training to operations and construction personnel on compliance requirements
  • Contribute to the development of environmental compliance plans and standard operating procedures for startup and operations.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • At least 5+ years of experience in environmental compliance and monitoring (preferably in mining, industrial, commercial, and/or energy).
  • Working knowledge of federal and Minnesota state regulations and processes.
  • Strong technical writing, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
Salary:
  • $110,000 - $145,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
