Position Summary
The Phlebotomy Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of associates within Inpatient Phlebotomy, [a1] and the specimen receipt area/front collection area at the following NRMC Clinics: Wound Care Center, Multispecialty Clinic, OBGYN Associates, Cancer Center Medical Oncology, Courtyard of Natchitoches, and Ambulatory Treatment Center. The Phlebotomy Supervisor also performs all duties of a phlebotomist on a daily basis.
Primary Responsibilities
1. Supervises all associates working in phlebotomy, including Medical Lab Assistants, coaching associates as needed per performance.Â
2. Instruct, in-services, and trains all phlebotomists.Â
3. Schedule staff for daily coverage adjusting for workload, special staffing requests, vacations, and sick leave.Â
4. Evaluates performance and competency yearly for ail phlebotomy personnel.Â
5. Maintains inventory, ensuring that supplies are adequate to perform all testing required.Â
6. Ensures that the Phlebotomy Policies and Procedures are understood, implemented, and maintained by all phlebotomy associates.Â
7. Ensures that the phlebotomy department meets/exceeds all requirements of The Joint Commission. Assumes responsibility for self-regarding knowledge of policies, manuals, and communications.Â
8. Takes responsibility for self-growth and job improvements and performs other duties as assigned.
9. Performs blood collection on outpatients, admits, Senior Care, MedSurg and Peds/Ortho/Surg patients, using appropriate collection method based on the age of the patient and using appropriate tube for tests ordered.
10. Collects or oversees the collection of other specimens as needed.
11. Assists nursing units with problem venipunctures
12. Collects chain-of-custody drug screens according to lab policy.
13. Receives specimens in LIS (Laboratory Information System).
14. Routes specimens to appropriate department of the laboratory for testing.
15. Rejects specimens that are collected or labeled inappropriately.
16. Completes requisitions for lab work sent to reference lab.
17. Files copies of outpatient orders and reference test results.
18. Inventories collection supplies and restocks as needed.
19. Answers telephone.Â
20. Greets and receives patients.
21. Plates microbiology specimens according to protocol.
22. Performs miscellaneous duties as deemed appropriate and when assigned by manager.

Requirements
Required Education and Experience
1. High School Diploma required.
2. Medical Laboratory Assistant Certification required.
3. BLS Certification required within 6 months of hire date.
Preferred Education and Experience
1. Previous Phlebotomy or MLA experience in a hospital setting.
