Job Description: Guidance Counselor

Location: Boxelder Job Corps - Nemo, SD

Employment Type: Full-Time - 7:30-4:00 or 8:00-4:30 Monday-Friday


About the Role

The Guidance Counselor at Boxelder Job Corps Center - Nemo SD,  plays a critical role in supporting the academic, career, emotional, and social development of students ages 16–24. This position provides individualized counseling, student advocacy, and program coordination to help students successfully complete training and transition into employment or higher education.

The counselor collaborates with instructors, residential staff, wellness teams, and administration to create a safe, structured, and supportive environment that promotes student success, accountability, and personal growth.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Education, or related field

  • Experience working with adolescents or young adults in an educational, behavioral, or counseling setting

  • Strong knowledge of counseling principles, student development, and ethical standards

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work with diverse student populations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in residential or Job Corps–style environments

  • Multicultural counseling experience

  • Training in crisis intervention or trauma-informed care

  • Familiarity with student information systems or case management software

  • Additional certifications in counseling or youth services

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group counseling for academic, career, and personal development

  • Support student retention, behavior management, and goal setting

  • Collaborate with staff to identify and assist at-risk students

  • Maintain accurate case notes and confidential student records

  • Provide crisis intervention and appropriate referrals

  • Conduct workshops on life skills, employability, and career readiness

  • Assist students with transition planning and post-program success
