Description

 

Excel Engineering, Inc. is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Electrical Engineer to join our Mounds View office. This role collaborates closely with engineers, project managers, and client teams to support capital and operational improvement projects, applying sound engineering principles to deliver safe, high-quality, and innovative designs. The ideal candidate is self-driven, client-focused, and effective at working both independently and within a team. 


Founded in 1990, we partner with clients in industrial manufacturing, utilities, and life sciences to deliver technically sound solutions that improve efficiency, safety, and overall operational performance.  

We provide end-to-end engineering services, including electrical design, industrial automation, power systems and arc flash studies, transmission planning, and construction management. Our engineers work in a collaborative environment that values technical excellence, practical problem-solving, and long-term relationships. 


Responsibilities 

  • Partner with clients to define project scope, develop engineering concepts, and prepare accurate cost estimates and proposals 
  • Execute detailed electrical engineering designs on single and multi-discipline project teams 
  • Design complex industrial electrical systems in compliance with NEC, NFPA, UL, and other applicable regulatory standards 
  • Prepare complete construction documents for permitting and bidding, including utility interconnections, power distribution, lighting, instrumentation, and fire alarm systems 
  • Develop and review one-line diagrams, motor load lists, electrical plan views, termination schedules, and panel schedules 
  • Specify, size, and select electrical equipment including transformers, switchgear, MCCs, motors, cables, and protective devices 
  • Design and coordinate electrical protection schemes, including overcurrent protection and protective relay settings 
  • Perform and oversee field site visits, construction observation, commissioning support, and system troubleshooting 
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, and resource allocation to ensure client satisfaction and business objectives are met 
  • Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior and mid-level electrical engineers and designers 
  • Willingness to travel up to 25%, as required by project needs 

Requirements

Experience & Education 

  • Minimum of 6+ years of experience in electrical engineering; industrial electrical design experience required 
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution (or equivalent experience) 
  • Preferred industry experience includes Manufacturing, Consumer Goods, Renewable Energy, Gas Processing, Chemical, Power, Waste Management, or Pharmaceutical facilities 
  • Strong working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70E, and other applicable standards 
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical or Eplan Electric P8 
  • Proficiency in SKM Power Tools, ETAP, Powerworld or other similar power system modeling software 
  • Experience with SEL Accelerator software, SEL RTAC and SEL Relays 
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or ability to obtain licensure within one year 
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office
