Job Summary:
The Clinical Informatics Nurse Specialist will act as a liaison between clinical staff and IT departments to enhance the use and functionality of clinical information systems. The specialist will facilitate the integration of data and assist in optimizing electronic health records (EHR) and other healthcare technologies to improve patient care outcomes, efficiency, and quality of service. Serves as a subject matter expert on all nursing electronic documentation and integration of technology into the EHR.
This role will also support strategic and quality goals of the nursing department and the organization, collaboratively working with key stakeholders supporting initiatives including effectiveness of interventions and opportunities for practice changes to positively impact patient outcomes.
Supports a shared governance model that advances the professional practice model for Nursing. Integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, and knowledge in nursing practice. Serve as a representative for nursing roles in providing clinical knowledge related to content, workflow, training and communication.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical System Optimization: Collaborate with nursing, medical providers and ancillary departments to assess and improve the functionality of clinical information systems. Lead initiatives for system enhancements, upgrades, and new implementations to enhance nursing practice. Participate in nursing and organizational policy formulation and decision making, particularly as it relates to technology impacting nursing practice.
In collaborations with IT department works closely with end-users to define business needs, document workflow, perform workflow analysis to develop automated or technical solutions and provides appropriate feedback.
Training and Support: Develop and conduct training programs for clinical staff on the effective use of the EHR and other healthcare technologies. Provide ongoing user support and troubleshooting for EHR and other clinical systems.
Data Analysis and Reporting: Analyze clinical data to enhance evidence-based practices and improve patient outcomes. Develop and distribute performance reports and dashboards to support clinical decision-making.
Collaborates with nursing, quality and leadership stakeholders on quality metrics concepts related to clinical applications to enhance quality outcomes.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with IT, nursing, and other clinical departments to ensure the seamless integration of technology with clinical workflows. Provides guidance and subject matter expertise to assist with integration of related processes (i.e. clinical workflow) necessary to achieve successful integration of new technologies.
Partners with nurses, medical providers and other clinicians to understand their work processes and business goals to adequately gather information to document project/request requirements. Ensures team(s) understands the work required implementing a new solution/enhancement and how the new solution/enhancement may change their current workflow. Identifies desired results of an initiative and drives toward achieving that result.
Serves as a liaison to HFSC clinicians, including physicians, nurse, pharmacists and ancillary staff to effectively execute assigned tasks and projects.
Provides feedback on recommendations to proposed changes, such as impact of change, communication/education required, or additional options.
Elicit feedback from nurses and other clinical on Altera topics or areas of concern from nurses and clinical leadership. Escalates challenges to leadership as appropriate.
Present various technology updates/documentation topics at various clinical and operational committees. Represents nursing interest in various hospital committees/task forces.
Best Practice Development: Identify opportunities to enhance clinical processes through technology and drive the adoption of nursing best practices within the organization. Ensures that the nursing medical record and care plans are evidence based, meaningful, efficient and user friendly.
Project Management: Lead and participate in projects related to clinical informatics, ensuring objectives are met within scope, time, and budget constraints.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure clinical information systems comply with applicable regulations, including HIPAA and other industry standards. Supports patient safety initiatives using technology solutions.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required. Master’s degree in Nursing Informatics, Healthcare Informatics, or related field preferred.
Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in CT.
Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of hospital clinical nursing experience. Prior experience in informatics and/or healthcare information systems preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- This job requires continuous periods of walking, standing, bending, reaching, with periodic sitting.
- Occasional climbing, squatting, and kneeling as related to patient care.
- Job requires the ability to push/pull up to 60 pound to assist with patient transfers.
- Position occasionally requires lifting patients and carrying items up to and over 75 pounds.
- In addition, this job requires frequent use of gross, fine motor and sensory skills in order to pass medications, perform assessments and treatments, and handle equipment used in patient care.

- Job requires independent problem identification abstract reasoning and adaptability to changing environments and information. Application of previously acquired knowledge, flexibility of thought and organizational skills are necessary. Quick decision making is required. Must be able to compute ratio, rate, and percent and perform arithmetic operations involving units of weights, measures, and volume
