The Land Steward implements and advances land management and preserve access initiatives across Connecticut, ensuring TNC lands contribute meaningfully to our ambitious goals for nature and people. This position directly implements land stewardship on the ground, including maintaining preserve areas and infrastructure used by the visiting public, conducting monitoring of and reporting on our various fee and easements within central and eastern Connecticut, supporting ongoing accessibility programs, and communicating with our landowners and partners to uphold conservation restrictions. Other duties include operating heavy machinery and maintaining a variety of tools and equipment.
Projects may involve working in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. Transportation will be provided.

The Nature Conservancy in Connecticut is seeking an experienced land steward to care for protected lands and support our conservation strategies in central and eastern Connecticut including Burnham Brook, Chapman Pond, and Selden Creek preserve. This position plays a key role in habitat management, infrastructure and trail maintenance, and other land management projects that uphold the conservation values of TNC properties and support access to nature. The Land Steward supervises no staff, but may help plan and direct volunteer or staff work parties.

What You’ll Bring:
BA/BS degree in a science-related field and 1-year related experience in custodial and ecological land management or a similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience with natural systems.
Experience in ecological land management principles.
Experience operating and/or repairing various types of equipment and machinery such as lawn mowers, chainsaws, UTV, ATV, brushcutters, or similar equipment.
Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a good driving record.
Must be able to obtain required licenses or certifications including First Aid, CPR, Stop the Bleed, and Game of Logging.
Desired Qualifications:
Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated. Experience working across cultures or communities; multilingual skills are a plus.
1 – 2 years related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience leading volunteers.
Ability to recognize plant and animal species to complete preserve management activities.
Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation/conservation or similar field.
Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Outlook, ArcGIS, Web browsers).
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing and verbally with a wide range of audiences, including staff, partners, and the public.
Certification in Game of Logging, Stop the Bleed, Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder.
Salary Information:
The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $31.00 - 34.00 per hour. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
