About the Department:
Electrical Engineering & Design Support
Department 457 provides electrical engineering and design support for all fleet VIRGINIA, OHIO, LOS ANGELES, and SEAWOLF class submarines, including Moored Training Ships and land-based prototypes. We resolve emergent fleet issues, modernize and upgrade systems, provide life cycle support, and deliver technical reviews for electrical systems critical to fleet readiness.

Role Overview:
Department 457 Electrical Engineers join a group responsible for supporting a wide range of electrical systems and equipment in the following areas:
- Reactor plant instrumentation and control systems
- Steam and electric plant systems
- Auxiliary electrical/electronic systems
- Power distribution equipment and systems
- Advanced power electronics
This position supports all fleet submarines, including Los Angeles, Ohio, Seawolf and Virginia classes; training platforms including S5W/S6G Moored Training Ships at NPTU Charleston, SC and the S8G Prototype at Kesselring, NY; and Multi Mission Platform (MMP)/Watchtower.Â

This role offers an unusually wide variety of work across assignments of varying duration, with increasing responsibility and independent as skills and experience grow.

Key Responsibilities:
- Perform initial system and/or component design and upgrades as ship alterations, in addition to ship’s life cycle support
- Function as a project engineer overseeing all aspects of engineering tasks including overall technical quality
- Work collaboratively in a team environment while maintaining schedules and budget awareness
- Interface with design and other engineering organizations and disciplines, technical writers, material buyers and program office representatives.Â
- Evaluate and provide technical resolutions to system and component related questions and problems from Naval Shipyards, Navy forces afloat, land-based prototypes, reactor plant prime contractors and NAVSEA engineering and program offices.Â
- Communicate effectively within the organization as well as with NAVSEA, prime contractors, Navy shipyards and equipment vendors.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
- 5+ years of post-graduate engineering experience
- Ability to obtain a DOD secret security clearance
Preferred:
- Experience in submarine systems described by this job description
- Experience in providing technical submittals to the government
- US Navy experience is desirable
