Smoker Craft, Inc currently has an opening for Plug Builder! This position works from our plant in New Paris, IN. 

Plug Builder’s starting pay is $26.61/hr. and with positive reviews can be increased to $28.61/hr. after 60 days. 

Shift Schedule is 5 am to 1:30 pm, Monday-Friday. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Plug Fabrication: Building prototypes and master patterns from a variety of materials including wood, MDF, high-density foam, modeling clay, and existing parts.
  • Precision Shaping: Translating complex 2D blueprints or 3D CAD designs into physical objects using hand tools, power tools, and precise measuring equipment like laser aligners and calipers.
  • Surface Preparation: Applying fillers and fairing compounds to smooth out imperfections. This involves rigorous block-sanding (often starting at 80 grit) to achieve a flawless "Class A" mirror finish.
  • Draft & Geometry Analysis: Ensuring the plug has proper draft angles (tapers) and flanges to allow for successful separation of the mold during the curing process.
  • Lamination & Sealing: Applying base layers of fiberglass and resin (often epoxy or polyester) over foam cores to provide a stable surface for final finishing.
  • Quality Assurance: Meticulously checking for pinholes, air bubbles, or symmetry issues that could transfer to the final production mold.

Required skills and experience:

  • Experience: 1–5 years in composite fabrication, marine tooling, or automotive bodywork.
  • Use various hand tools
  • Be able to bend, crouch, stoop, lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Experience with longboard fairing and specialized finishing techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and 3D templates.
  • Familiarity with various resins, gel coats, and release agents like waxes or PVA.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long shifts (8+ hours), lift up to 50 lbs, and work in dusty environments while wearing full PPE (respirators, gloves, and protective suits)


Schedule: 

-8-hour shift

-Day shift 5 am - 1:30 pm

-Monday to Friday
