Job Summary

TYLin is seeking an experienced Civil Field Inspector to support construction activities at an active airport facility in Long Island, NY. This role is fully site-based and plays a critical role in ensuring quality, safety, and compliance across airfield-related concrete and paving operations. While prior aviation or airfield experience is strongly preferred, candidates with substantial roadway or highway construction inspection backgrounds will also be considered.
This position requires close coordination with the Resident Engineer, contractors, airport operations, and multiple stakeholders in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

What You’ll Do:

  • Perform daily field inspections of concrete, asphalt milling, and paving operations, ensuring work complies with contract documents, plans, specifications, and applicable standards.

  • Monitor contractor activities to verify adherence to quality, safety, and sequencing requirements within an active airfield environment.

  • Coordinate daily with the Resident Engineer (RE), fellow field inspectors, and the Office Engineer to support accurate tracking of pay items and construction progress.

  • Review contractor submittals and follow up to ensure timely approvals and compliance.

  • Address and track Requests for Information (RFIs), coordinating responses with the RE, NYSDOT, and Engineer of Record (EOR).

  • Prepare detailed daily inspection reports and maintain accurate as-built documentation.

  • Coordinate daily activities with Airport Maintenance teams (Civil and Electrical) and airport facilities, including Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF).

  • Review monthly contractor progress payments for accuracy prior to submission to the RE.

  • Support field documentation and communication to minimize operational impacts to airport users and maintain FAA compliance.

What You’ll Bring

  • 5–7+ years of experience in asphalt milling, paving, and concrete construction inspection.

  • Ability to quickly learn airfield operations and FAA Advisory Circulars related to asphalt milling and paving design mixes.

  • Strong understanding of construction means, methods, and sequencing for heavy civil projects.

  • Proven team-oriented mindset, working collaboratively with the Resident Engineer and fellow inspectors.

  • Experience coordinating closely with an Office Engineer on daily pay item tracking and quantities.

  • Demonstrated ability to address contractor RFIs and communicate effectively with REs, state DOTs, and Engineers of Record.

  • Experience reviewing submittals and verifying contractor compliance with contract documents.

  • Strong documentation skills, including preparation of daily reports and maintenance of accurate as-built records.

  • Comfortable coordinating daily with airport operations, maintenance staff, and emergency response teams.

  • Detail-oriented with the ability to work effectively in a live airport construction environment.
