Position Title: Bus Driver (CDL requirement)

Reports to: Program Director

Position Overview

As a CDL Driver, you’ll be responsible for safely operating agency passenger bus, maintaining vehicle safety standards, assisting program participants, and supporting daily program activities. Be committed to dignity, respect team work and service to older adults
 

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate agency 15-passenger while prioritizing participant safety.
  • Apply professional CDL driving skills to ensure safe transportation.
  • Transport participants to scheduled trips, activities, and community-based programs.
  • Maintain vehicles and follow all transportation safety requirements and regulations.
     Support program operations through transportation assistance and center activities.
  • Respond to participant needs with patience, professionalism, and care.
  • Support program needs on days without trips.
     

Passenger Transportation & CDL Bus Operations

  • Safely operate assigned agency vehicles, including 12-passenger and 18-passenger buses, to transport program participants to and from scheduled trips.
  • Utilize a valid New York State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to operate agency passenger vehicles in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Transport clients to various destinations such as older adult centers, trips or outdoor activities.
  • Ensure the comfort, safety, and well-being of all passengers during transportation.
  • Assist participants as needed when boarding and exiting vehicles.
  • Communicate with participants regarding scheduled trips, transportation needs, and follow-up information.
  • Maintain a professional, courteous, and respectful approach when interacting with older adults. 

 

Vehicle Maintenance & Operations

  • Maintain assigned buses in a safe, clean, and operational condition at all times.
  • Perform routine vehicle inspections, including checking:
    • Fluid levels
    • Tires
    • Safety equipment
    • Emergency supplies
  • Ensure vehicles are equipped with required emergency equipment, including spare tire, jack, and other necessary supplies.
  • Arrange for fuel and oil purchases according to agency procedures.
  • Change tires and perform minor vehicle maintenance tasks when necessary.
  • Complete and maintain accurate trip tickets, mileage records, and other required transportation documentation.

 

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all traffic laws, CDL requirements, transportation regulations, and agency safety procedures.
  • Maintain a safe driving record and immediately report accidents, vehicle concerns, or traffic violations to the supervisor.
  • Ensure safe operation of agency vehicles at all times.
  • Ensure the safety of the passengers through the use of seat belts, wheel chair brackets and other safety devices.
  • Exercise sound judgment when responding to transportation-related situations.

 

Program Support & Participant Services

  • Immediately notify the Program Director or designee of unusual situations or concerns involving participants, including:
    • Participant appears ill or requires assistance.
    • Changes in behavior or condition are observed.
  • Participant does not respond or requires additional support. 
  • Enter transportation and program-related information into the NYC Aging electronic database.
  • On days without trips, assist with meal preparation, serving, and program setup at the center as needed.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum of one (1) year of professional driving experience required.
  • Experience operating passenger buses or CDL-required vehicles preferred.
  • Experience transporting older adults, individuals with disabilities, or community members preferred.
  • Must have no more than one moving violation within the last two years.
  • No history of driving while intoxicated (DWI) convictions.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English.
  • Ability to work as part of team.
  • Demonstrated respect for the older adult population.
     

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid New York State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required.
  • Ability to safely operate both 12-passenger and 18-passenger buses required.
  • Must maintain a valid CDL and meet agency vehicle operation requirements.
  • CPR Certification required or can be attained within first 30 days of employment
  • Current United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) Medical Examiners Certificate on file with DMV.  
     
     

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (50 pounds or more).
  • Ability to climb stairs and assist participants as needed.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and remain physically active for extended periods.
  • Ability to safely operate passenger buses and assist participants with mobility needs.


Schedule – Monday – Friday 8-4PM, with some extended days required
