Position Summary

The Cleaner/Housekeeper is responsible for providing comprehensive custodial and housekeeping services to maintain a clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment throughout the Wagner College campus. This position supports the daily operation of campus facilities by ensuring all assigned areas meet the College's standards for cleanliness and appearance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Empty trash and recycling receptacles daily and dispose of waste in designated areas.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, including sinks, mirrors, toilets, urinals, showers, and fixtures on a daily basis.
  • Wet mop restroom floors daily.
  • Vacuum, sweep, and mop floors in assigned areas.
  • Damp mop corridors, lobbies, dining areas, and other public spaces daily.
  • Dust furniture, windowsills, light fixtures, and other surfaces on a regular basis.
  • Monitor assigned areas for spills, leaks, or other safety hazards and address them promptly.
  • Wash interior and exterior windows as scheduled or as needed.
  • Strip, refinish, and maintain floor surfaces according to departmental schedules.
  • Follow established cleaning procedures and properly use approved cleaning agents, disinfectants, and germicidal solutions.
  • Report any malfunction, damage, or tampering involving life safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, exit signs, locks, and emergency systems.
  • Report maintenance issues requiring repair, including plumbing, windows, flooring, furniture, and other facility concerns.
  • Assist with the setup and breakdown of furniture, equipment, and materials for campus events and special functions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the operations of the Facilities Department.
Qualifications Education
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred.
Experience
  • Previous custodial or housekeeping experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of commercial cleaning methods, products, and equipment.
  • Experience operating mechanized cleaning equipment such as vacuums, buffers, floor polishers, and similar machinery.
Licenses
  • Valid driver's license required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to manage time effectively.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills when interacting with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Ability to read and understand safety rules, operating instructions, equipment manuals, and cleaning procedures.
  • Ability to follow established health and safety protocols.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
  • Regularly works in environments that may be damp, dusty, dirty, or exposed to cleaning chemicals.
  • Must be able to safely clean and disinfect areas involving human waste and other bodily fluids.
  • Position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, and other physical activities throughout the workday.
  • Must meet the physical requirements outlined in the College's Physical Assessment Form.
  • Must wear the required department uniform and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Schedule
  • Schedule may include first, second, or third shift, based on departmental needs.
  • Weekend, holiday, overtime, and shift assignments may be required.
  • Flexibility to work alternate schedules or additional hours as needed to support campus operations.
Additional Requirements
  • Must become and remain a member of Local 32BJ in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
