Montefiore Medical Center's Division of Clinical Pathology is responsible for the laboratory testing of blood, urine, and body fluids for disease diagnosis and health maintenance. Utilizing the latest advances in computer technology, the Division maintains millions of dollars of state-of-the-art automated equipment at its laboratory sites and services hospitals, nursing homes, the Montefiore Medical Group, faculty practices, and voluntary physicians' offices at more than 40 sites.Ā 
The Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) – Surgical Pathology performs technical and clerical functions in support of the Surgical Pathology Laboratory. Responsibilities include accessioning support, specimen handling, grossing assistance for simple specimens, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, frozen section support, Digital processes slide preparation, staining procedures, quality control activities, laboratory information system documentation, slide and block management, and support of pathologists and pathology trainees. Will perform laboratory tests pursuant to established and approved protocols, requiring the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility. Maintain equipment and records; perform quality control and quality assurance related to test performance.

The Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) ensures compliance with CAP, CLIA, NYSDOH, OSHA, Joint Commission, and institutional requirements while maintaining specimen integrity and turnaround times.

Essential Functions:
•   Ā Run tests on patient samples, provide report to the Physician and identical critical results
•   Ā Maintain quality control data on tests performed, resolve QC failures and document
•   Ā actions as stipulated by laboratory proceduresĀ 
•   Ā Maintain inventory and clean work environment, and advise supervisor as needed
•   Ā Perform daily, weekly and monthly preventative maintenance procedures
•   Ā Teach, train and share practical knowledge with other staff responsible for entering and managing entry of medical necessity, results, and/or manual billingĀ 
•   Ā Run Tissue processors to produce paraffin blocks, Gross simple biopsies under supervision
•   Ā Responds promptly, courteously, and professionally to phone and written inquiries from clients about test information, results, and other elation information
•   Ā Solves specimen problems in a timely, through and accurate manner, providing appropriate documentation for supervisor review
•   Ā Works with leadership to review and update procedures, policies, and job aids
•   Ā Match specimens against requisitions for appropriate Specimen container
•   Ā Answer telephones, intercom and window reception in a courteous and professional manner
•   Ā Respond to inquiries concerning patient reports, specimen requirements, procedures, time required for tests
and preparation of specimens to outside labs for analysis
•   Ā Resolve specimen or order-related problems
•   Ā Embed pathology specimen to view all layers. Support frozen sections procedure by assisting Pathologists and Pathologist assistants and prepare tissue for frozen section analysis
•   Ā Maintain chain of custody and specimen integrity throughout the testing process
•   Ā Perform microtomy using rotary microtome, produce high quality tissue sections free of folds, chatter, knife marks or other artifacts
•   Ā Perform manual and automated cover slipping procedures, Scan, distribute, file and retrieve pathology slides, and paraffin blocks
•   Ā Perform routine hematoxylin and eosin staining, special stains, Immuno histochemistry procedures and stain preparation with controls. Prepare reagents, buffers and solutions according to approved procedures
•   Ā Enter lab orders and updates in to LIS, maintain accurate documentation and electronic records
•   Ā Record equipment maintenance and performance tasks, compliance with NYSDOH, CAP, CLIA, OSHA and Joint commission standards
•   Ā Participate in competency assessments and continuing education activities
•   Ā Coordinate workflow with departmental staff
•   Ā Assist in maintaining departmental turnaround time goals

Qualifications:
•   Ā Associate’s degree required; Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technician or life sciences or Histology or Anatomic Pathology Laboratory coursework preferred
•   Ā A minimum of 1 year in Histology, Surgical Pathology, or Anatomic Pathology experience required
•   Ā New York State Department of Education Clinical Laboratory Technician License or a limited permit are required
•   Ā Knowledge of the procedures for all histopathology, immunohistochemistry techniques and roper operation of all equipment used in Histology Laboratory are required
•   Ā Must have experience with the following equipment operation: rotary microtome, Laboratory Information System, Scales, Microwave, pH meter, Automated cover slipper, Ā  Microscope, Embedding Center, Tissue processor, Water bath, Cryoplate, Incubator oven Ā 

This position is located in the Surgical Pathology lab at the Moses campus. The hours are 5:00am  – 1:30pm Monday - Friday.
