Job Summary

The Director of Enterprise AI & Automation Solutions  is a strategic, execution-focused leader responsible for advancing the organization’s AI capabilities across the business of law. This role defines and executes the enterprise AI strategy, identifies high-value business use cases, establishes governance and responsible AI practices, and partners across functions to scale solutions that deliver measurable business impact. The position requires deep expertise in AI, machine learning, data platforms, and enterprise architecture, paired with strong business acumen, stakeholder leadership, and program delivery experience. The Director manages a team and works closely with business functional leaders, professional staff, attorneys, paralegals, the Innovation department, and firm leadership to strategically integrate AI and automation technologies that improve operational efficiency. The ideal candidate is an experienced legal technology professional with broad expertise in AI and automation, law firm project management, and leadership of strategic technology initiatives.

Job Responsibilities

  • Define and lead the company’s enterprise AI vision, roadmap, and operating model aligned to business strategy, including the design, piloting and implementation plan.
  • Identify, prioritize, and evaluate AI and automation use cases across functions such as operations, finance, HR and marketing.
  • Drive adoption of AI-enabled workflows and ensure solutions deliver measurable outcomes.
  • Build a multi-year AI transformation plan that balances innovation, risk management, and value realization.
  • Stay current on AI, generative AI, automation, and emerging technologies to inform enterprise adoption decisions.
  • Oversee vendor evaluation and management for AI platforms, tools, and strategic partnerships.
  • Partner with Legal, Compliance, Risk, Information Governance and Information Security to establish enterprise-wide AI governance, including model lifecycle management, oversight, controls, ethical standards and policy development.
  • Develop responsible AI principles and guardrails for fairness, transparency, explainability, and human oversight.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership on AI and workplace efficiency opportunities, risks, investments, and strategic priorities.
  • Collaborate with business leaders to define success metrics, business cases, and implementation plans for AI and workplace efficiency initiatives.
  • Lead and mentor a high-performing team of AI, data, and technology professionals.
  • Build organizational AI fluency through training, communication, and change management initiatives.
  • Define KPIs and success metrics for AI programs, including efficiency gains, cost savings, revenue impact, risk reduction, and user adoption.
  • Monitor performance of deployed AI solutions and continuously optimize for business value and model effectiveness.
  • Create executive-level reporting on enterprise AI and workplace efficiency portfolio performance, roadmap progress, and ROI.
  • Develop the budget and financial forecast for the AI and productivity toolset.
  • Build relationships with members of the Professional Staff Leadership group to support alignment of their strategic objectives and efficiency initiatives supporting their groups.
  • Lead the Enterprise AI and Productivity Solutions team to deliver innovative solutions tied to real-world challenges, using human-centered design methods to design and implement solutions including ideation workshops, user interviews, journey mapping, process mapping, and rapid prototyping.
  • Oversee the Enterprise AI & Productivity Solutions third-party vendor relationships, in collaboration with the relevant SME(s) and Harbor procurement group, including with respect to feature requests, usage metrics, and change management strategies.
  • Define ‘build vs. buy vs. partner’ AI infrastructure and framework.
  • Manage strategic alliances with hyperscalers and frontier-model providers.
  • Lead initiatives for attorneys, paralegals, and professional staff on AI and other technology best practices, including developing and championing key design deliverables, service blueprints, process flows, wireframes, business model canvasses and best practice/implementation playbooks. Work closely with Business Functional Heads and their teams, Practice Support, Practice Management, and other administrative departments to ensure high-level competency in AI across our business services teams.
  • Regularly evaluate and report on the ROI, roadblocks, and opportunities of AI and productivity solutions across the firm, combining qualitative and quantitative data to tell compelling narratives and shape solutions.
  • Partner with the Information Technology, Practice Technology, and General Counsel teams to facilitate a consistent and coherent approach to ensuring compliance with legal, ethical, and firm policy requirements regarding the firm’s use of AI and other innovative technologies.
  • Bridge silos with respect to the firm’s management of innovation solutions and other technologies, across both administrative and legal departments.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Expert-level knowledge of legal innovation and legal technology ecosystem, including the benefits and risks of generative AI.
  • Strategy experience with modern LLM’s, agentic systems and legal platforms.
  • Tech savvy, with strong knowledge of relevant industry platforms, solutions and tools and best practices in legal operations, including familiarity with artificial intelligence and its potential.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply technology solutions to solve business problems.
  • Deep understanding of law firm compliance obligations, including ethical obligations relating to the implementation of AI solutions.
  • Ability to provide quality client service to both internal and external clients. Involves the use of considerable tact, discretion, and persuasion in gaining the cooperation of others.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with both technical staff and vendors, and non-technical parties such as attorneys, secretaries, and clients
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret information from a variety of sources, apply critical and creative thinking to develop solutions to complex problems.
  • Ability to motivate others and build effective, cooperative work teams, fostering an environment in which teamwork and interdependent thinking are encouraged and reinforced.
  • 5+ years leading enterprise-scale AI, machine learning, advanced analytics, or automation initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing AI strategy in a complex enterprise environment.
  • Strong understanding of AI/ML concepts, generative AI, data platforms, cloud technologies, APIs, and enterprise systems integration.
  • Experience building governance frameworks for AI, data, or analytics programs.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence senior stakeholders.
  • Experience managing budgets, vendors, roadmaps, and multi-workstream programs.

Education

The position requires a Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. 

Experience

This position requires a minimum of ten (10) years of  progressively responsible legal technology experience specific to technology adoption that includes demonstrated management experience. Law firm experience preferred.

Pay Range

DC: $195,000-$290,000
NY: $220,000-$320,000

The salary for this position may vary based on location, market data, an applicant’s skills and prior experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other factors.
