The anticipated salary range for this role is between $225,000.00 and $225,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Role Description

SMBC is seeking a Vice President to join its Project Finance (PF) Latin America Team within the Credit Portfolio Management group.

 

The Team is responsible for managing all aspects of Latin American project finance portfolio. The portfolio consists of power, energy and PPP/PFI (infrastructure) transactions in Latin America. The role entails performing credit monitoring/control/administration of a portfolio of borrowers with a view to identifying potential credit issues preemptively. In addition, a significant portion of the role involves analyzing amendment/consent/waiver requests, evaluating the credit impact of the requests and any mitigants, and preparing applications with recommended actions for credit approval.

Role Objectives: Delivery

  • Perform effective credit and risk management, with an emphasis on adherence to credit policy and requirements, financial analysis/modeling, risk evaluation, on-going portfolio maintenance activities, and as needed client support
  • Oversee the creditworthiness of an assigned portfolio of obligors across complex Project Finance / Corporate transactions and their ability to meet their financial obligations. Proactively monitor the portfolio to identify potential deterioration at an early stage.
  • Monitor and report on portfolio quality against established criteria, and recommending adjustments in risk ratings to existing credit facilities as appropriate.
  • Prepare periodic credit reviews for borrowers within the assigned portfolio.
  • Analyze borrower requests (e.g., amendments, waivers, consents) and, where appropriate, seek credit approval. Ensure submissions clearly demonstrate an understanding of the request, its impact on credit risk, relevant mitigants, and the rationale for approval.
  • Coordinate with borrowers, legal counsel, independent engineers, and other consultants to structure and manage consent processes, including consent, waivers and amendments to financing documents.
  • Respond to ad hoc information requests in a timely manner.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience covering project finance transactions within a portfolio management team or credit department at a lending institution.
  • Strong background in accounting / financial analysis / financial modelling / legal documents is preferred.
  • Required: BA / BS
  • Preferred: MA / MS / MBA
  • Spanish fluency is preferred

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Broad knowledge of the Project Finance market and other asset-based credit structures, and the ability to manage risk within a complex and diverse portfolio often involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Deep understanding of legal documentation and financial analysis.
  • Experience in proposing and negotiating, both internally and externally, consents/waivers/amendments and managing execution within tight timelines.
  • Self-drive and motivated; takes ownership of specific assignments.
  • Demonstrate high degree of attention to detail and ability to complete work accurately and in a timely manner against strict deadlines.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills (both written and verbal) and strong understanding of regulatory and compliance frameworks.

Additional Requirements
