The opportunity

As a Software Engineer in the Robotics and Automation group at Radical AI, you will design and deploy systems to automate our material science research and discovery laboratory.  You will specialize in robotics, automation, and perception software development.  


Your experience and vision will shape both the physical and systematic implementation of lab automation. You will collaborate closely with Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering and Material Scientists to meet rigorous and sometimes dynamic design requirements at a profound deployment speed.

Mission
  • Architect and develop software systems that control and orchestrate  robotic workcells for autonomous materials experimentation
  • Design scalable control frameworks for flexible automation involving robots, motion systems, sensors, and lab instruments
  • Collaborate with hardware, mechatronics, and science teams to translate experimental workflows into reliable automated processes
  • Build and maintain APIs and services for scheduling, execution, monitoring, and data capture
  • Develop simulation, testing, and validation tools to accelerate development and ensure system reliability
  • Integrate 2D and 3D vision systems (cameras, lighting, depth sensors) with robotic manipulation, motion planning, and execution
  • Optimize system performance, robustness, and throughput under rapid iteration cycles
  • Contribute to technical direction, architecture decisions, and best practices across the robotics, perception, and automation software stack
  • Mentor junior engineers and help establish engineering standards in a fast-growing organization
  • Bring an attitude of collaboration and open-mindedness, to facilitate fearless and creative problem solving skills that empowers our team to ship world class technology at an unprecedented speed.


About you
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • Four+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant work in robotics or automation systems
  • Strong proficiency in modern programming languages such as Python and C++
  • Experience with robotic control frameworks (e.g., ROS/ROS2 or equivalent custom systems)
  • Experience with physical simulation environments (e.g. MuJoCo, IsaacSim), and hardware-in-the-loop testing
  • Solid understanding of motion planning, state machines, real-time or near-real-time control systems
  • Experience integrating hardware systems including robots, sensors, vision systems, and industrial equipment
  • Ability to work independently in a hands-on, development-oriented environment.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across engineering and scientific disciplines.


Pluses
  • Experience deploying autonomous systems in laboratory, manufacturing, or industrial environments
  • Experience deploying autonomous mobile robots and working with simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM)
  • Experience with reinforcement learning and computer vision applied to robotics
  • Familiarity with machine learning applied to robotics, experimentation, or optimization
  • Prior startup experience or ownership of systems from early prototype through production
