Position Summary

Under direct supervision, performs billing and account receivable activities to maximize insurance reimbursement and promote faster payments while ensuring compliance with departmental and Physician Organization (PO) billing policies and procedures.

Job Responsibilities

  • Performs charge entry and/or payment posting within the practice management billing system as needed. Tracks and resolves issues on denied claims. Resubmits or appeals claims as required. Escalates more complex claim issues when necessary.
  • Obtains, reviews and updates patient demographic and insurance information within the practice management billing system.
  • Verifies patient insurance eligibility and obtains necessary pre-authorization numbers, if required, prior to appointment date. Facilitates the communication and collection of any fees due from patient.
  • Attends workshops, seminars and/or conferences to keep abreast of standards and best practices within the field. Disseminates information to colleagues and/or staff as appropriate.
  • Responsible for front-end revenue cycle processes, which may include but is not limited to, the check-in/check-out of patients and collection/reconciliation of time-of-service payments, as applicable. May also discuss patient’s payment responsibility.
  • Ensures complete patient registration and that pertinent documentation is scanned into the patient’s electronic medical record.
  • Schedules follow-up patient appointments at the time of check-out.
  • Assists with appointment referrals and billing concerns. Escalates complex issues.
  • Trains and assists new staff with systems and departmental processes.

Education

  • High School Diploma

Experience

Bachelor's degree is preferred.

Approximately 4 years of medical billing experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Prior experience working with an eMR system.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state reimbursement regulations.
  • Knowledge of third party insurance billing policies and procedures.
