Job Summary
The Surgical Physician Assistant (PA) provides medical services within the scope of their education, training, and clinical experience, as delegated by the supervising physician.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Obtaining patient histories and performing physical examinations
- Ordering and/or performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
- Formulating diagnoses and developing treatment plans
- Implementing and monitoring therapeutic interventions
- Assisting in surgical procedures
- Providing patient counseling and education
- Making appropriate referrals for patient care
Essential Functions
The Surgical Physician Assistant may perform the following duties and procedures:
- Abscess incision and drainage
- Administration of local anesthesia
- Arterial punctures
- Arterial line removal
- Bladder irrigation
- Administration of blood products
- Cast application and removal
- Central venous pressure (CVP) line removal
- EKG recording
- Enteral feeding tube insertion and removal
- Foley catheter insertion and removal
- Extremity immobilization
- Administration of subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intradermal injections
- Intravenous medication administration
- Laceration repair
- Nail trephination
- Nasogastric tube insertion and removal
- Oropharyngeal airway management (current ACLS certification required)
- Pap smear collection
- Administration of skin tests
- First assist duties in the operating room
- Suction procedures
- Surgical dressing application and removal
- Suture and staple removal
- Venipuncture
- Wound debridement
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Master’s degree preferred
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program preferred
Licensure/Certification
- Current Physician Assistant license required
- Current ACLS certification required for airway management procedures
Occupational Health Requirements
- OHS Fit Test
- OHS Annual Assessment
