Energy Tax Associate or Counsel | Tax Equity and Clean Energy

San Francisco, New York, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, and Seattle.

Our AmLaw 100 client is hiring a senior associate or counsel into its energy and climate solutions platform. This is a sponsor-facing tax role inside a nationally recognized renewables and energy transition practice with meaningful depth in project finance, tax credit transactions, and emerging climate technologies.

You would step into work that sits at the center of clean energy financing: tax equity partnership deals, inverted lease and sale-leaseback structures, equipment safe harbor matters, tax credit transfer transactions, and substantive federal tax credit advice. The practice spans wind, solar, storage, geothermal, nuclear, advanced manufacturing, EV charging, carbon capture, and other next-generation energy infrastructure. This role is open across San Francisco, New York, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, and Seattle.

What you’ll handle
Lead and manage tax-driven energy transactions from structuring through closing. Advise developers, sponsors, and financing parties on tax equity and transferable credit deals. Work closely with lawyers across corporate, debt, securitization, and broader project finance teams on sophisticated clean energy matters.
Who fits
6+ years of tax equity transactional experience at a national law firm. Strong command of partnership flip transactions, inverted leases, sale-leasebacks, safe harbor structures, tax credit transfers, and written federal tax advice. Candidates with sponsor-side experience are especially well placed, but investor-side lawyers looking to pivot into a more sponsor-oriented practice should also take a serious look.
Why this one?
This team has real market presence. Chambers recognizes the firm in Projects: Renewables & Alternative Energy nationwide, noting its sponsor-side renewables and tax equity capabilities, and the firm also holds Chambers recognition in tax. The broader platform has continued to add rankings and momentum, with 39 geography-specific Chambers USA practice rankings in 2025. The group also has a track record in early clean energy tax credit transfer work, including counsel on one of the first transfer transactions announced after IRS guidance.

Just as important, this seat offers direct access to the head of the energy tax team, real client contact, and room to run deals instead of staying buried in support work. The firm also points to formal professional development and career coaching resources for associates and counsel, which matters in a practice where technical growth and deal judgment both count.

Compensation is set at $390,000 to $435,000, based on class year, with discretionary merit bonus eligibility.
