Now Hiring: Maintenance Technician III
At First Student, our Maintenance Technicians keep our buses and vans safe, reliable, and ready for the road. This position is designed for an experienced automotive or diesel technician who can independently diagnose and repair more complex mechanical issues while helping support and develop other technicians in the shop.
The Maintenance Technician III performs routine and advanced maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs with minimal supervision. This role may provide guidance to Technician I and Technician II employees and may serve as a Shift Foreman, with eligibility for a shift premium when applicable.
Pay Rate
$30.00 per hour
Key Responsibilities
Perform basic and complex vehicle maintenance and repairs with minimal supervision, including:
Light bulbs, fuses, lenses, and wiper blades
Belts, hoses, batteries, and fluid checks
Fluid and filter changes and component lubrication
Perform mechanical repairs, including brakes and brake inspections, engine tune-ups, suspension, drivetrain, transmission clutches, and related systems
Diagnose and repair vehicle and equipment issues, including using computer-based and manufacturer diagnostic software
Lead preventative maintenance (PMs), safety inspections, and annual maintenance inspections
Remove, overhaul, and reinstall mechanical components with minimal Tech in Charge supervision
Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, parts usage, and supply records
Order repair parts from designated suppliers
Evaluate completed work before vehicle release and obtain approval when required
Identify and report potentially unsafe equipment and document corrective actions
Lead road calls and emergency services as needed
Safely move vehicles between work and service areas
Repair and maintain shop equipment
Follow all First Student standards, policies, procedures, and safety requirements
Mentor or provide informal guidance to Technician I and Technician II employees
Perform other duties as assigned
Education & Certifications
High school diploma or GED preferred
Vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair preferred
Class B CDL with passenger endorsement required, or expected within 3 months of hire
State inspection license, if required
ASE Certification preferred
Participation in the ASE testing program required
Expected to obtain 6 ASE certifications within 6 months of hire
Experience & Skills
Advanced mechanical aptitude
5 years of automotive or diesel repair experience preferred, or equivalent education and experience
Knowledge of state DOT motor vehicle inspection and safety standards
Valid driver's license
Advanced diagnostic and problem-solving skills
Advanced computer skills
Comfortable using hand tools
Excellent customer service and communication skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment
Regular, predictable attendance is an essential function of the position
Commitment to keeping vehicles maintained and safe for our customers
Adequate personal mechanic tool inventory to perform assigned duties, maintained in a clean and safe condition
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
Maintenance shop environment with dust, dirt, and grease
Ability to work in all weather conditions
Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
Ability to work in crouched positions or on a mechanic's creeper beneath vehicles
