Marymount School seeks a dynamic, skilled history teacher for a leave replacement for the duration of the first semester, from August 27 to December 19, 2026, with the possibility of an extension. Marymount history teachers are passionate about their discipline and inspire in students a deep curiosity about the past and its connection to the present, creating a classroom culture that is intellectually vibrant and engaging. They design learning experiences that invite students to grapple with complex texts and ideas and develop a lasting love of history.

The ideal candidate brings strong content expertise, particularly in global and U.S. history, and a clear commitment to helping students develop a broad, inclusive perspective and a nuanced understanding of the forces—political, cultural, economic, and social—that shape our world.

The ideal candidate also fosters a collaborative, student-centered classroom where discussion, inquiry, and intellectual risk-taking are central. We are looking for a teacher who will be attentive to the diverse needs of learners; committed to creating an environment in which all students feel known, respected, and empowered to grow; and will bring experience guiding students through research and writing processes, including document-based inquiry, designing a variety of meaningful assessments, and supporting students in developing their analytical voice with clarity and confidence.

Beyond the classroom, Upper School teachers at Marymount serve as academic advisors and contribute to the broader life of the school by moderating at least one student club or activity. They collaborate closely with colleagues, communicate regularly with families, and engage fully in the school community.

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching three sections of Upper School history, including Advanced History XII: Global Media Studies, Advanced Global History, and U.S. History.
  • Providing support for Upper School students in the writing center (during scheduled blocks)
  • Collaborating with colleagues on lesson planning, assessment-design, and grading, and fostering a positive community within and beyond the department
  • Providing faculty leadership for the Upper School Mock Trial team, which meets as a regular part of the school day (with competitions in the second semester)

Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree or higher in history or a related field (advanced degree preferred)
  • Experience teaching history at the secondary level
  • Demonstrated commitment to student-centered, inquiry-based pedagogy
  • Strong skills in teaching writing, research, and critical analysis
  • A commitment to equity and belonging in teaching practices
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
