The Janitor/Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, healthy, and welcoming environment for participants, families, staff, and visitors participating in the DYCD-funded COMPASS Program. This position supports daily facility operations by ensuring classrooms, offices, restrooms, common areas, and program spaces are properly cleaned, maintained, and prepared for use.

The Janitor/Custodian plays a vital role in promoting health, safety, and facility readiness while contributing to a positive environment that supports youth development, family engagement, and community programming.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Facility Maintenance & Cleaning
  • Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, common areas, and program spaces.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and maintain floors and surfaces throughout the facility.
  • Empty trash and recycling receptacles and ensure proper disposal of waste.
  • Replenish restroom, cleaning, and facility supplies as needed.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of storage areas, supply rooms, and maintenance spaces.

Facility Operations & Support
  • Assist with room setup and breakdown for meetings, workshops, events, and community activities.
  • Support facility readiness before, during, and after program operations.
  • Assist with moving furniture, equipment, and supplies as needed.
  • Monitor facility conditions and report maintenance concerns to program leadership.
  • Support special events and program activities as assigned.

Health & Safety Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with health, sanitation, and safety standards.
  • Safely handle and store cleaning supplies, chemicals, and equipment.
  • Identify and report safety hazards, facility concerns, or maintenance issues.
  • Assist with emergency preparedness procedures and facility safety efforts.
  • Support efforts to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all participants and visitors.

Compliance & Administrative Responsibilities
  • Follow organizational policies, procedures, and facility standards.
  • Maintain cleaning schedules, supply inventories, and maintenance logs as assigned.
  • Ensure proper use and care of custodial equipment and supplies.
  • Participate in required trainings and professional development opportunities.
  • Support monitoring visits, inspections, and compliance reviews as needed.

Program & Community Support
  • Collaborate with program staff to support daily operations and facility needs.
  • Provide courteous and professional interactions with participants, families, staff, and visitors.
  • Support community events, family engagement activities, and organizational initiatives.
  • Serve as a positive representative of Hands That Make A Difference.
  • Contribute to a clean, safe, and welcoming environment that supports program success.

Minimum Qualifications

Education
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.

Experience
  • Previous custodial, janitorial, maintenance, or facility support experience preferred.
  • Experience working in schools, community centers, nonprofit organizations, or public facilities preferred.
  • Experience using cleaning equipment and supplies safely and effectively is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of custodial cleaning methods, sanitation practices, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment and custodial tools safely.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and visitors.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and perform physical tasks throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and move materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment and custodial tools safely.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors as needed.
  • Ability to respond to facility and maintenance needs in a timely manner.

Required Certifications & Clearances
  • Background Check
  • Completion of all required DYCD trainings
  • Additional clearances as required by organizational policies
