Production Education Assistant (PEA) – Technical Theater

Supervisor: Manager, Youth & Emerging Artist Development

Position Summary

Production Education Assistants (PEAs) in Technical Theater are essential members of NJPAC’s Arts Education team. PEAs support the technical and production needs of NJPAC’s Arts Education Department (AED), contributing to Saturday Arts Training programs, rehearsals, performances, and special events. In this role, PEAs gain hands-on training in technical theater, stage management, audio and lighting operations, and production logistics—all while helping to deliver high-quality, inclusive, and inspiring arts education experiences for students.

All PEAs are required to attend mandatory yearly training sessions and consistently engage in ongoing professional development to ensure alignment with NJPAC’s vision, safety standards, and program goals.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist with obtaining, setting up, and breaking down technical equipment and production items for events as assigned, including Saturday Arts Training classes, rehearsals, and performances in the community.

  • Serve as run crew for assigned events, operating lighting and audio consoles as needed to support program activities.

  • Assist the Coordinator, Youth & Emerging Artist Development, with regular maintenance, monitoring and basic repairs of Arts Education instruments and technical equipment to ensure required items are present and functioning ahead of rehearsals and class sessions.

  • Report all technical updates to the Manager of Youth & Emerging Artist Development and Stage Manager in advance of performances.

  • Attend technical rehearsals as part of the Arts Training Program and final performances.

  • Take notes on technical theater and stage management during Arts Training Program classes.

  • Aid in the organized storage of technical equipment to ensure accessibility and longevity.


  • Communication: Report all technical needs, suggestions, and concerns to the Coordinator of Youth & Emerging Artist Development through regular check-in meetings. Respond promptly to scheduling requests and feedback from NJPAC staff and program leadership.

  • Professionalism: Represent NJPAC with professionalism, including timeliness, preparation, and appropriate conduct in all program settings and on NJPAC’s campus.

  • Safety: Practice and uphold production safety measures during all performance events and while present on NJPAC’s campus.

  • Professional Growth: Stay current with technical theater resources, tools, and industry practices to continuously strengthen your contributions to NJPAC’s programs.

  • Equity and Inclusion: Uphold NJPAC’s values of inclusion, anti-racism, and cultural responsiveness in all program interactions and learning environments.

Preferred Experience:

  • 1+ years of experience in performing arts support (audio, lighting, set design, costuming, production, stage management) or other relevant experience. 

  • A valid NJ Standard Driver's License and current OSHA10 certification are a plus.
