About the Role

 

The primary purpose of the Staff Pharmacist position is to provide a high level of comprehensive pharmaceutical services as defined in the Departmental Mission Statement. Organizes, leads, directs, and verifies the duties and functions performed by supportive personnel to ensure the provision of accurate, efficient, safe, and effective medication therapy for all ages and population served by University Hospital. Acts as a medication information resource to patients, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do

  • Provides patient‑centered service, creating a friendly, welcoming, and safe environment; communicates clearly; resolves complaints; organizes work to meet customer needs; meets/exceeds service expectations; models Service Excellence; maintains composure; works with team to meet service targets; and demonstrates respect for patient rights.
  • Prepares, properly labels, and distributes medication orders for inpatient, outpatient, and ancillary areas.
  • Interprets physician medication orders for accuracy and appropriateness, identifies and communicates errors or discrepancies, and recommends appropriate or alternative drug therapy based on patient condition.
  • Provides patient‑specific dosage regimens and protocols using pharmacokinetic/pharmacologic characteristics, disease states, concurrent therapy, demographics, and lab data to improve safety and outcomes.
  • Maintains accurate patient medication profiles, ensuring appropriate drug choice, dosage form, strength, therapy duration, and interaction potential.
  • Trains, oversees, educates, and checks the work of supportive personnel and students; assumes charge pharmacist duties for coordinating weekend/evening shifts, supervising staff, delegating tasks, and resolving issues in the absence of leadership.
  • Coordinates daily sterile and non‑sterile compounding, including IV admixtures, TPN, chemotherapy, special dosage forms, and miscellaneous products, adhering to USP <795>, <797>, <800>, aseptic technique, and patient care needs.
  • Manages controlled substances, record‑keeping, investigational drugs, inventory control/purchasing, and monthly floor inspections to ensure proper storage, removal of outdated medications, and communication with nursing—serving as pharmacy liaison for routine issues.
  • Participates in department communication, including meetings, in‑services, understanding memos/minutes, and maintaining knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures; provides education to staff, students, and patients as needed.
  • Maintains departmental quality standards through MUE, QA programs, continuing education, and adherence to UH compliance standards and all applicable laws, regulations, and policies; performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

What You’ll Bring

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy or Pharm D. Degree from an accredited institution required.
  • Must be a Registered Pharmacist Licensed in the State of NJ

Preferred:

  • Prior hospital pharmacy experience desired
  • Residency training or Board Certification strongly preferred

Compensation (NJ Job Transparency Law)

In compliance with New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, the hourly rate for this position is $59.42 - $86.53.
