The Lab Assistant coordinates lab processes and manages flow of information. Responsible for drawing blood samples from patients using the proper skills and techniques to obtain sample with minimal discomfort to the patient. Responsible for medical and lab supplies throughout clinic. Job Duties: Performs venipuncture and capillary collections on WHA patients with minimal discomfort and using the appropriate personal protective equipment. Communicates appropriate information to the clinicians regarding specimen collection. Dispatches specimens to appropriate testing locations. Accurately labels and processes specimens using appropriate equipment and devices (e.g. centrifuges and pipettes). Stores specimens under appropriate environmental conditions. Troubleshoots missing lab orders, determines the problem and notifies appropriate staff accordingly to correct. Contacts appropriate clinical staff for missing information on lab orders. Acts a liaison between clinical staff and lab staff for missing lab results or other problems. Ensures screening instruments and lab equipment are within parameters of CLIA regulations, including quality control assurance. May includes autoclave maintenance, glucometer, urinalysis, AED verification, code cart management and other relevant testing and/or equipment. Washes, wraps and sterilizes instruments. Maintains lab records for quality assurance as required. Administers injections, excluding IV's or giving IV medications. Prints insurance labels for lab requisitions from computer system. Reviews patient registration information and scheduling according to procedures, and reports changes to appropriate person at each location. Carries out clinician orders accurately. Maintains a clean working environment. Adheres to infection control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations. Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department records per guidelines. Reviews and maintains various logs and records. Reviews and scrubs lab schedules and enters appointments notes to ensure correct labs are being drawn. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Certification from an accredited medical assisting or phlebotomy program preferred, or the equivalent combination of classroom training and/or work experience. Current CPR certification required. Previous medical assisting, lab, or phlebotomy work experience in a medical group setting preferred.
