The incumbent must be able to use basic mechanics hand tools, weld, read blueprints, cut and thread pipe, perform layout procedures and calculations, repair and adjust; hydraulic, air conditioning, water systems, overhead cranes, cooling towers, rig cables, operate mobile equipment, repair pumps; motors, fans, compressors, conveyers, power transmission equipment and repair & adjust gas & coal combustion systems. Fabricate & install structures.

Essential Functions of the Job:  The following duties of a Power Mechanic are considered to be essential functions of the position:

  • Perform basic mathematical skills.
  • Use basic hand and power tools.
  • Read blueprints and schematics correctly.
  • Utilize safety in all areas of the work environment.
  • Perform pipe fitter skills.
  • Perform hydraulic and pneumatic skills.
  • Perform rigging skills.
  • Operate equipment (mobile crane, forklift, man-lift)
  • Perform repairs on pumps, motors, fan, compressors, boilers, conveyors, power transmission (including setting and alignment)
  • Perform welding skills.
  • Perform combustion skills.
  • Fabricate & install sheet metal & structures.
  • Use personal computer for obtaining information, documenting time, etc.
  • Perform housekeeping.
  • Participate in all required training, safety activities.
  • Perform equipment and system troubleshooting as required.
  • Understand and apply Alcoa business systems principles.

Equipment/Tools including but not limited to: Drills, impacts, hammers, screw drivers, end wrenches, socket drives, pliers, hack saws, pipe wrenches, adjustable wrenches, allen wrenches, torque wrenches, grinders, sanders, pipe cutting and threading machines and hand held pipe cutting and threading machines and hand help pipe cutting and threading tools, taps and dies, squares, levels, files, brushes, plum bob, chisels, punches, band saws, chop saws, micrometer, dial indicator, dial caliper, feeler gauges, oxygen/acetylene and electric welding equipment.

Safety Equipment/Personal Protective Equipment: Safety glasses, Hard Hat, Safety Boots (Metatarsal, electrical hazard, grounded, steel toed), 100% cotton clothing, long sleeves, gloves, slicker suit, rubber footwear, hearing protection, respirator and self-contained breathing equipment.
