POSITION SUMMARY: 

Under the direction of the Director of Health and Wellness, the Personal Trainer/Health and Wellness Coordinator contributes to the successful operation of the West Suburban YMCA’s Health and Wellness programs including program development, program staff orientation, community relations and financial results. This position will assist in supporting, mentoring and orienting personal trainers to embrace the YMCA culture and spirit, focusing on building relationship skills and superb customer service.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

Assists in the development and orientation of personal trainers. 

Assists in implementing strategies to ensure that members and/or program participants connect with one another and connect with the YMCA. 

Alongside the Director, monitors monthly revenue goals to assure that revenue targets specific to income-based wellness programs are met and expenses are controlled. 

Actively supports the organization’s DEIB commitments by modeling equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging in daily work. Recommend and helps implement strategies and initiatives that advance the organization’s diversity goals.   

Ensures operational growth of both youth and adult personal training sessions through program development and expansion and member / program recruitment and retention. 

Mentor and provide an orientation and training for personal trainers to help understand the YMCA culture and mission. Develops a plan for onboarding new staff in those areas and creates a plan to set them up for success. Facilitates communication and provides leadership. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.  

Oversees scheduling of Fit Connect sessions for new members.   

Serves as a liaison between members and personal trainers, ensuring appropriate matches based on individual needs, goals, and trainer expertise. 

Build diverse and adaptable curriculum for personal training programs and help to train personal trainers on how to execute curriculum to provide consistent, quality sessions. 

Ensures high-quality member-focused programs through innovative program development, evaluations and ongoing mentoring of staff. 

Aids in the support of medically based wellness programming such as Livestrong at the YMCA. 

Participate in special events and activities to enhance the member experience and volunteer opportunities. 

Ensure standards are met regarding implementation and oversight for program evaluation.  This will guarantee faithfulness to the Y’s cause and a high-quality commitment to YMCA standards and successful financial outcomes. 

In direct member service 30-35 hours per week (i.e. 25 - 30 hours personal training, up to 5 hours of group exercise instruction/small group classes ie. Women and Weights and 5 hours of administration- assist with staff orientation and training and program development).   

Assist Director and/or Assistant Director with monthly staff trainings for Wellness staff and ensure consistent safety / emergency response training is reviewed and understood by all fitness staff. 

Actively support the Annual Campaign and be a department staff leader towards a successful team achievement.  

Help to promote the marketing and distribution of program information. 

Support the Director and/or Assistant Director in conducting inventory and operating supplies for the department.  

Gather program statistics as requested. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of and participation in program.  Submit program enrollment data when requested.  

Ensure that all programs under your supervision meet the highest standards of program and member service quality and safety. 

Work in earning LiveStrong certification to help administer LiveStrong at the WSY. 

This is a seven-day/week department and will require a flexible schedule to maintain consistency and delivery of programs and services.   

Perform all other duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Associates’ degree in human services, social services, recreation, business or equivalent preferred. 

A national recognized Personal Training Certification. 

Two years’ experience in personal training. 

Ability to prioritize workload in accordance with department, branch and organizational goals. 

Committing to support and further our equity-centered work as an organization.  Actively supports all DEIB efforts. 

Integrate and lead groups of diverse individuals and departments in collaborative activities aimed at advancing wellness throughout the association. 

Strong relationship building skills to develop solid relationships leading up, across and down in the organization. 

Reliable, dependable, great time-management skills and ability to multi-task. 

Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community. 

Understanding of the nature and purpose of YMCA and the respective roles of volunteerism and staff. 

CPR and First Aid certifications required. 

Other certifications necessary for related field. 

Administrative rate = $19-$20 hr., Personal Training rate = $30-$40/hr. depending on experience, education and certifications.
