Job Summary


This position in Parks and Recreation works in the Division of Senior Services. The employee plans and coordinates a variety of recreational, social and fitness activities to enhance the quality of life of senior services. The position is supervised directly by the Operations Manager. 


Essential Functions


Essential Functions: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.


Plans, coordinate, promote and facilitate wellness and fitness activities. These activities include exercise classes, walking program, bowling, table tennis, and all types of activities.


Plans, coordinate, promotes and facilitates recreational and social activities; designs and teaches art and crafts classes; purchases materials and maintains organized class art and crafts materials 


Assists with special event planning and implementation. Events include parties, annual events, pageants, day trips, overnight trips and any other activity listed on the annual plan and monthly calendar. 


Recruits for, promotes and documents activities. These functions include but are not limited to making announcements, assisting with sign-ups, documenting daily attendance, distributing flyers, posting information, and answering questions from clients. 

Maintains the exercise room by tracking use, conducting safety and usage orientations, cleaning equipment and towels and reporting needed repairs.

Completes administrative functions relating to the position including tracking usage, collecting sign in sheets from various locations, entering data in computer spreadsheets, completing incident reports, collecting information for and completing the monthly report. Documents blood pressure usage and serve as a backup for taking vital signs. 

Assists with the congregate food service program including serving meals, recording names and other duties as needed and as assigned. 


Works with representatives from the Rockdale Senior Site Council in the areas of wellness, safety and trips. 


Transports seniors to daily or special activities as assigned. Maintains qualifications as multi-passenger (non-CDL) bus driver. 


Coordinates and participates in periodic weekend or night events including Fall Festival, State Talent Show, Golden Olympics, Christmas parade and trips. 


Coordinates special projects / events and performs other related duties as needed and assigned. 


Additional Duties:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


Knowledge of and ability to plan, coordinate and conduct physical fitness and wellness programs.


Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of recreational activities and programs.


Knowledge of arts and crafts activities and programs.


Knowledge of basic safety and first aid procedures.


Knowledge of effective safety standards and precautions related to fitness and recreational programs and related to working with persons aged 60+.


Skill in leading and implementing various recreational activities.


Skill in operating modern office equipment including but not limited to computers, phones, and copy machines/printers.


Skills in computer software including Word, Excel, Teams and Outlook


Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.


Ability to manage work schedule and assignments autonomously and in conjunction with others and complete work in a timely manner.


Ability to complete training assignments and maintain required training certifications.


Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.


Ability to keep records and prepare reports.


Ability to organize and actively participate in various indoor and outdoor recreational activities.


Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, county employees and clients/members.


Ability to drive a car and or passenger van/bus.


Ability to lift and carry 30+ lbs.


Ability to see, hear, talk, bend, lift, carry, write, walk and move.

 

Working Conditions


Hazardous conditions can be present in driving, performing kitchen operations and in working with a high-risk population.

 

Minimum Qualifications


  1. Associate’s degree in health, physical education, recreation or related field.


  1. Two (2) years’ experience in planning, organizing, implementing, leading and or coordinating wellness/fitness/social/arts & crafts programs.


  1. OR have a combination of education, training and work experience that is equivalent to #1 and #2 above that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for the position


  1. One year’s experience in utilizing word processing, email and spreadsheet software applications



  1. Eligibility to work with elders in the state of Georgia evidenced through a federal digital fingerprint background check (conducted as required by DHS regulations)


  1. Obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid/AED, Defensive Driving and Serve Safe food handler certifications (new hire obtain within first 90 days of employment)

 

  1. Valid State of Georgia Driver’s License

 


Preferred Qualifications


  1. Bachelor’s degree in health, physical education, recreation or related field.


  1. Gerontology certificate in aging services, mental health or related specialty.


  1. One (1) experience in working with seniors’ citizens (60+)


  1. Experience in teaching arts & crafts, games, and sports, preferably to senior citizens
