Job Summary

Job Title: Transportation Manager

Location: Norfolk, VA (onsite)

KEY RESULTS AREAS / PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The position is based on procedures for selecting, monitoring and analyzing the performance of the transportation suppliers.  While the position is based on a structured process, flexibility is required to handle special customer needs within the constraints of the local market for transportation services.  The function is very important in that it provides an opportunity to positively differentiate our company from our competitors and add utility to our products.  All positions within the Supply Chain Department have cross-functional responsibilities in Customer Service and Distribution.

Position Activities and Responsibilities include:

Daily Transportation Management

  • Develop and implement strategy to determine optimum mode of transportation to deliver best customer performance

  • Develop strategic alliances with select carriers to provide quality service at lowest total cost

  • Locate and assign carriers to individual orders using cost-effective and reliable carriers

  • Negotiate truck, rail and intermodal freight rates

  • Achieve transportation cost and service objectives

  • Maintain carrier rate databases & freight invoice audit

  • Create and distribute standard reports regarding freight costs and carrier performance

  • Order rail cars and monitor private rail fleet

  • Maintain high communication standards with key internal stakeholders such as Plant, Customer Service

  • Improve safety measures linked to logistics activities

  • Ensure that logistics related regulations are respected

Inventory Planning & Management

  • Regularly monitor demand against available stock levels to trigger timely replenishment

  • Ensure appropriate stock levels at third-party warehouses via regular physical inventories

  • Inform stakeholders of potential supply issues and loading risks

Third-Party Service Provider Management

  • Manage the performance of local third-party logistics providers (shipping lines, freight forwarders, road carriers, stockists, etc.)

  • Verify monthly billing and invoicing reports.

  • Intervene to resolve major issues or disputes related to service providers and ensure effective communication

Team Management

  • Manage a team of logistics specialists

  • Manage schedules, workload, and team priorities

  • Maintain robust backup systems and cross-training to ensure service continuity

  • Monitor team performance against internal KPI’s

  • Other duties, as assigned 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Logistics or Supply Chain Manager or equivalent experience.

  • Requires knowledge of the transportation industry, strong negotiations and analytical skills and must have excellent computer skills.

  • Must have at least 3 years experience in supervising others and 5 years experience working in transportation.

  • Knowledge of the cement industry is a plus.

  • ERP experience, ideally SAP

  • Knowledge of logistics regulations

  • Ability to influence and collaborate effectively across departments

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong aptitude for problem-solving

  • Ability to address conflicts in a constructive and collaborative way

  • Ability to manage projects 

KEY CHALLENGES

Must be able to multi-task in ensuring all customer orders are delivered within customer expectations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires remaining in a seated position for long periods of time, the ability to pick, pinch or otherwise work primarily with fingers to operate keyboards for computer work.  This position requires the employee to frequently walk, bend, stoop and have the ability to lift and or move up to 25 pounds and mostly works in an office or plant environment.  This position is exposed to a cement and often dusty plant work environment and with contact with our product.  Based on the hazards of working in a plant/industrial environment, this position requires alertness, the ability to think rationally while working on multiple tasks.  This position needs the ability to express or exchange ideas, provide detailed spoken instructions by means of the spoken word to impact oral information to managers, suppliers, contractors, co-workers, direct report or the public.   While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.  The employee is required to stand, walk, sit and climb or balance.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to ensure individuals with disabilities can perform the essential functions.
