Public SafetyJob Summary/Basic Function
Position Summary
Public Safety Officers are responsible for maintaining a safe and secure living and working environment on campus, enforcement of parking regulations, facilities security and property protection, and emergency response. Officers ensure compliance with the laws and statutes of the Commonwealth and regulations and policies of the College.
Essential Functions
Provide a safety and security presence on campus by application of conscientious vehicle, foot (and bicycle as appropriate after receiving IPMBA certification) patrol functions on a daily basis. 20%
Respond and investigate crimes reported, vehicle accidents on campus property, medical emergencies, fires, safety hazards and fire and security alarms received. 20%
Enforce applicable state criminal codes, College parking regulations and College regulations and policies. Appear in court or at administrative hearings regarding incidents that occur on college property as needed. 15%
Render public relations services to the College community and campus visitors, assist motorists, conduct escorts and perform traffic duties. 15%
Conduct security and safety inspections of buildings and grounds, open and secure buildings, and perform crime prevention functions. 10%
Complete written incident reports and necessary forms as they relate to law enforcement duties. 10%
Represent the Department and the College as needed on various committees at the College or in the community. 10%
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Operate alarm systems both in campus buildings and at the central monitoring station with specialized computer programs.
Other duties as determined or assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Not responsible for supervising others.
Education and Requirements
High school diploma or GED, required
Bachelor's degree, preferred
Prior law enforcement experience may substitute for a bachelor's degree
PA Act 235 Lethal Weapons training or the ability to obtain this certification within six months of hire.
Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain this license within 30 days of hire.
PA Act 120, other state equivalent or military police certification preferred.
Current First Aid/CPR certification
This position is subject to the Pennsylvania Act 153 Clearance consisting of the Pennsylvania Criminal History Record Information Check, Pennsylvania Child Abuse Certification, and Federal Criminal History Record Information Check pursuant to Pennsylvania law and Dickinson College policy.
