Based in our North Kingstown, RI facility, and reporting to the Director of Platform Engineering, the Senior Mechanical Engineer will design and develop mechanical designs, enclosures, components, assemblies and systems for innovative electrolytic chlorinators, water quality sensing, chemical automation and pool control equipment. He/she will execute product design from concept through volume production and ensure that the highest levels of design quality and performance are observed.
Responsibilities
- Develop concepts to meet defined market criteria as part of a development team.
- Conduct design feasibility and trade studies in support of product development.
- Execute hands-on product design with detailed calculations, simulations, CAD modeling and product testing/analysis for complex electro-mechanical assemblies.
- Work with internal resources and outside vendors and partners for product prototype development
- Participate in formal design reviews and team activities such as design concept brainstorming, 3P Kaizen and FMEA.
- Collaborate with test/lab resources for Reliability Engineering and Product Testing/Compliance.
- Communicate design requirements to Hayward manufacturing and outside suppliers in the form of fully detailed and tolerance production engineering drawings.
- Provide detailed project status inputs to project managers as required.
Qualifications
- 8+ years’ experience in design and development of medium to high-volume consumer products (experience with control automation or water treatment products a plus)
- Experience with cross-functional rapid product design/development teams and methods
- Demonstrated experience with the development of products from concept to final manufacture, balancing cost, performance and schedule requirements and integrating Voice of the Customer in the design process
- Knowledge of design process tools and techniques for robust design such as DFMEA, PFMEA, technology readiness analysis and Voice of the Customer; six sigma experience a plus
- Expertise in structural/thermal/flow finite element analysis; experience with CFD a plus
- Broad knowledge of injection molding, metal working and rapid prototyping technologies
- Experience in electronics integration and packaging, including thermal management of electronics enclosures and cable routing/management
- High level of proficiency with 3D CAD tools, preferably SolidWorks; experience with PDM tools a plus
- Expertise in dimensional management, statistical tolerancing and tolerance stackup analysis using GD&T per ASME Y14.5-2009
- Experience with configuration management and the engineering change control process
- Familiarity with regulatory compliance requirements for design and testing (UL, CSA, NSF)
- Ability to develop product test criteria and requirements
- Skill in Root Cause Analysis of product testing and field failure data
- Strong interpersonal, communication and analytical skills; skill at developing and delivering technical subject matter presentations to non-technical staff and executives

Education:
B.S. Mechanical Engineering required; M.S. Mechanical Engineering a plus.
