PAUL JOB DESCRIPTION PAID-ON-CALL FIREFIGHTER   Position Summary Protects life and property by performing firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention duties. Maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities. Works under the general supervision of the Fire Chief, receives task supervision from all Chief Officers and Team Leaders. Essential Areas of Responsibility Emergency Response Responds to fire, medical, rescue, and haz-mat emergencies as assigned. Fire Prevention & Education Assist with the administration of public education programs on fire safety for the North St. Paul Community. Assist with the administration of Youth Fire Prevention education programs. Assist with the administration of annual Fire Prevention Week education programs/presentations for schools in North St. Paul. Assist with Project SafeHaven: home safety inspections and smoke alarm installation. Other Responds to a minimum of 25% of station all calls per month, quarter, & annually. Participates in the EMS First Responder Duty Shift program with a minimum of 12 hours per month. Participates in the Fire Duty Shift program with a minimum of 8 hours per month. Attend related meetings during regular and after-hours as directed or needed to maintain required certifications. Assist in call tracking and record keeping using Image Trend. Keep the Fire Chief informed of job-related activities. Attend ongoing training to maintain required certifications and proficiency. Follows City policies, procedures, operations, and safety rules. Performs other duties as apparent or assigned. Schedule There is no set schedule; you are called in to respond to emergencies and attend meetings and training events as required. Supervisory Responsibilities Follows Chain of Command   Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Skills to communicate with a variety of individuals and handle a variety of customer service situations. Basic knowledge of building construction and electrical wiring. Ability to use various office equipment and software programs.       Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, citizen commissions, council members, staff from other public agencies, and citizens. Ability to maintain physical fitness and perform the duties of a firefighter. Ability to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Safety It is the responsibility of all City staff to promote and contribute to a safe work environment. This is accomplished by proactively identifying and correcting the unsafe conditions or notifying the appropriate personnel to address the problem. All employees shall follow all City and other applicable safety policies and procedures related to the job. Operates all equipment according to proper safety procedures and standards; does not exceed load limits, performance abilities, and adheres to all traffic laws. Language Skills Ability to read and interpret detailed instructions, correspondence and procedural manuals, City policies, ordinances and contracts, state statutes. Ability to use grammar and spelling to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Mathematic Skills Ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages. Ability to create tables and graphs and effectively communicate analytical conclusions.   Reasoning Ability Ability to solve and deal with practical problems. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral or other forms.     QualificationsMinimum Qualifications and Requirements Must be at least 18 years old. High school diploma or GED equivalent. Current, valid MN Driver’s License Must have a (10) minute response time to our station located at 2400 Margaret Street in North Saint Paul, MN 55109 from your primary residence. No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories.
