Job Summary
SummaryThe Histotechnician is responsible for performing various technical and related duties in the histology section of the laboratory.
This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
This position reports to the Supervisor of Anatomic Pathology and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.Does this position require Patient Care? No.
Essential Functions-Perform a variety of technical and clerical duties to prepare specimens for microscopic examination by the Pathologists. Embed and perform microtomy of tissue specimens and the staining and mounting of tissue sections obtained from surgical, autopsy, and other sources.
-Review sections microscopically for the detail of the stain and the presentability of the specimen in order to maintain pathologic quality control standards.
-Maintain orderly files of blocks and slides for both surgical and autopsy specimens. Compile daily statistics related to the Histology Section. Perform accurate daily accessioning of surgical specimens obtained from surgery and outpatient locations.
-Maintain equipment and work areas in clean and orderly condition and perform normal preventive maintenance as required. Maintain quality control of all equipment and corresponding documentation. Adhere to all chemical hygiene practices and standards.
-Participate in the development or revision of procedures and techniques.

Education
Associate's Degree Related Field of Study required or Bachelor's Degree Related Field of Study preferred

Licenses and Credentials
Histotechnologist [HTL(ASCP)] - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) required
Experience
Experience as Histotechnician 2-3 years preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated competency in all special stain and immunohistochemical techniques, including preparation of various reagents and stains required.
- If the employee does not meet registration requirements within 1 year of employment, the position will be forfeited.
