For more than 118 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. We are home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, and are the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services. We deliver and coordinate a continuum of high-quality healthcare with the goal of improving the health of our communities.

 

Position Summary:

 
Performs various functions on rotational basis in inpatient, outpatient, controlled substance and floor stock drug distribution, intravenous admixture preparation, and extemporaneous compounding. 
Places wholesale drug orders and confirms receipts. Assists pharmacist in all aspects of Pharmacy operations (including computer system) in order to meet the goals and objectives of the Pharmacy Department. All activities are performed under the supervision of pharmacist.


Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of the math competency test. Associates Degree is preferred.
 

Experience: Three (3) or more years experience as a pharmacy technician is preferred.

License and Certification:

  • Pharmacy Technician certification required. 
  • Must have an active national technician certification from an accepted licensing board. 
  • Must be A Registered Pharmacy Technician with the CT Department of Consumer protection within 30 days of hire.
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician with the CT Department of Consumer protection is preferred. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, and effectively communicate information. 
  2. Basic computer skills (including opening/reading email, basic internet use).
  3. Strong customer service orientation. Effectively communicates with patients, employees, physicians and managers. 
  4. Must be organized, flexible and a team player. 
  5. Ability to work in a stressful environment. 
  6. Ability to handle multiple priorities. Demonstrates initiative in all job related activities.
     

Problem Solving and Decision Making:

Requires the ability to recognize problem situations and refer them to the appropriate staff member. Work is performed in accordance with instructions and procedures. Requires the ability to exercise discretion and use good judgment. Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
