The Assistant Professor, Medical Sciences is responsible for the delivery and ongoing development of the Phase 1 (pre-clerkship) curriculum at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine (HMSOM). This role teaches within a highly integrated curriculum that connects basic science to clinical medicine and brings depth in their discipline alongside an appreciation for how foundational science informs medical practice. This role engages and advises students, contributes to the design and delivery of Phase 3 electives for fourth-year students, serves on committees, and maintains appropriate scholarly activity.

  • Full Professor - Starting at $183,664.00 Annually

Responsibilities

A day in the life of an Assistant Professor at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Teaches in the School of Medicine's highly integrated 3+1 curriculum, which features a 3-year core curriculum followed by an individualized 4th year program.
  • Plays a central role in the pre-clerkship program, delivers basic science content in the context of its clinical relevance and uses active learning methods that support lifelong learning. 
  • Develops and delivers Phase 3 electives for fourth-year students, drawing on basic science and translational expertise.
  • Serves on School committees and pertinent work groups, initiates active membership in related professional/academic organizations.
  • Participates in the ongoing assessment, evaluation, and improvement of curriculum content, maintains course material at the highest level and ensures it reflects what medical students need to know.
  • Advises and supports students on curricular and academic matters, including, but not limited to approaches to learning, content understanding, examination preparation, and research or scholarly pursuits, with attention to each student’s personal and professional development.
  • Assists in LCME, MSCHE, OSHE, NJ-BME, and DOE accreditation activities.
  • Engages in scholarship and research to advance medical education and scientific knowledge.
  • Performs other faculty duties and assumes academic roles commensurate with rank and experience.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required as an Assistant Professor:

  • Ph.D., Ph.D. equivalent, M.D., M.D. equivalent or D.O. with specialization in a basic science field.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following: Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Pathology, Immunology, Microbiology, Genetics, Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, or a related basic science discipline.
  • Familiarity with translational science and an ability to connect basic science to its clinical application in teaching.
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching, or demonstrated potential to teach effectively, in undergraduate medical education and/or other biomedical science settings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred as an Assistant Professor:

  • Experience, or demonstrated potential, in team-based, problem-based and case-based learning with students in both large and small class settings.
  • Publications, presentations, extramural grant funding, patents or research activity in a relevant basic science or translational field or demonstrated activity potential to develop a scholarly profile (regional, national, or international reputation).
  • Demonstrated ability, or the potential, to use active learning methods effectively in a medical education setting.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability, or the potential, to develop integrated medical science course materials for pre-clerkship medical students, with an understanding of both basic science and its clinical relevance.
  • Knowledge across more than one basic science area - such as cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, physiology, or pharmacology - and an appreciation for how these connect to clinical medicine.
  • Skills necessary to contribute to the continued development of a department of medical sciences at an emergent allopathic medical school.
  • Experience with LCME accreditation activities.

 

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required as an Associate Professor:

  • Ph.D. ,Ph.D. equivalent, M.D, M.D. equivalent or D.O. with specialization in a basic science field.
  • Expertise in one of the following: Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Pathology, Immunology, Microbiology, Genetics, Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, or a related basic science discipline.
  • Familiarity with translational science and an ability to connect basic science to its clinical application in teaching.
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching, or demonstrated potential to teach effectively, in an undergraduate medical education and/or other health science settings.
  • A minimum of 6 or more years of experience at the Assistant Prof Level at a medical school or biomedical sciences level.
  • Scholarship, including peer-reviewed publications indexed in PubMed, and/or other research or creative work in the appropriate discipline or field as defined by the current edition of the HMSOM Navigation Guide.
  • Service to the institution, the profession, and/or the community, with peer recognition for excellence at a national level or higher.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office platforms

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred as an Associate Professor:

  • Experience, or demonstrated potential, in team-based, problem-based, and case-based learning with students in both large and small class settings.

  •  A minimum of 12 or more years of relevant teaching experience at a medical school or biomedical health sciences level.
  • Scholarship, including peer-reviewed publications indexed in PubMed, and/or other research or creative work in the appropriate discipline or field as defined by the current edition of the HMSOM Navigation Guide.
  • Service to the institution, the profession, and/or the community, with peer recognition for excellence at a Regional level or higher.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred as a Full Professor:

  • Experience, or demonstrated potential,  in team-based, problem-based, and case-based learning with students in both large and small class settings.
