Overview:  

The Quantum Communications and Networking Group, within the Quantum Information Sciences Section, Computational Sciences and Engineering Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is seeking a research and development (R&D) Scientist.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Participate in new and ongoing research on classical and quantum optics communications and sensing projects.
  • Formulate novel classical and quantum optical sensing solutions to problems of national interest and support the research and development necessary for the practical implementation of those solutions
  • Participate in field testing and demonstrations
  • Interpret, report, and present research concepts and results to national audiences at all levels
  • Write peer-reviewed papers and technical reports for internal and external release and represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in physics, optics, electrical engineering, or a related field completed within the last 10 years

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • We are interested in candidates with general research experiences in classical and quantum optics, optical sensing, and quantum information science
  • Priority is given to candidates with proven experience designing, building, testing, and integrating novel quantum and/or classical optical communications and sensing hardware in critical infrastructure and/or extreme (heat, electrical, high pressure, vacuum, radiation) environments.
  • Experience with data analysis using MATLAB or Python
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Proven ability to conduct field work in austere environments
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

 

Special Requirements: 

  • Q clearance with SCI:This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.  In addition, due the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.
