Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS), is actively seeking Engineering, Professional, Technical, and administrative support personnel as part of our staff augmentation team supporting the Department of Energy at the Y‑12 National Security Complex located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and the Pantex Plant located in Amarillo, Texas.  To join our team of outstanding professionals, apply today!

 

Successful candidates will be employees of AIS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance Y-12's core mission to ensure a safe, secure, and reliable U.S. nuclear deterrent, which is essential to national security. Though employed by AIS, the employee will take day-to-day direction and assignments from Y-12 staff employed directly by the security complex. Pay, benefits, Human Resources, and Employment Management functions are provided by AIS.

 

Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.

 

This position is contingent upon contract award and funding. Applicants selected may be hired but cannot begin work until funding has been confirmed. 


Responsibilities

  • Specialty Mechanical Engineers in the Projects Equipment Design Engineering organization are responsible for creating design and procurement documents for specialty and first-of-a-kind equipment such as glovebox systems, furnaces, high vacuum systems, metal casting/machining equipment, etc.). Engineering design tasks may include
    • a) Collaborating with designers to develop build-to-print design packages of custom, specialty equipment;
    • b) Development of procurement documents such as equipment specifications, statements of work, and datasheets;
    • c) performing calculations and analysis associated with machine design (to include, but not limited to, finite element analysis, structural and seismic analysis, ergonomic studies, kinematic calculations and heat transfer calculations).
  • Position requires a commitment of 10 hours per day, Monday through Thursday with core working hours of 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The position will be full-time. No travel is expected for this position.
  • Preferred experience for this position includes:
    • a) Advanced experience in machine design (preferably with glovebox systems, furnaces, high vacuum systems and metal casting/machining equipment);
    • b) Thorough knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards;
    • c) Experience writing detailed, accurate procurement documents including both design/build equipment specifications and equipment fabrication specifications for custom designed equipment;
    • d) Experience with engineering calculations/analysis associated with machine design including finite element analysis, structural and seismic analysis, ergonomic studies, kinematic calculations, heat transfer calculations, etc.;
    • e) Experience leading multi-discipline teams that include mechanical, electrical, instrumentation/controls, HVAC, piping, process and welding disciplines on machine design efforts;
    • f) Producing build-to-print equipment fabrication packages including fabrication drawings, fabrication specifications, procurement documents, calculations, etc.;
    • g) Experience in 3D CAD modeling using PTC Creo and/or SolidWorks.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 10 years' experience with design/specification of custom mechanical equipment.
  • 15-20 years of total experience
  • Must possess a bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited school.
  • Active DOE Q clearance or ability to get one is required. 

Special Requirements:

  • Pre-employment Drug Screen - external applicants selected for this position are required to successfully complete a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
  • Medical Exam(s) - Job related pre-placement medical examinations may be required for this position.
  • This position may require the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. If determined as such, this position would be identified as a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in addition to the pre-employment drug screen.
