Summary:
The Controls Engineer is responsible for the design, development, manufacture, installation, and testing of control systems and the engineering documentation required to support these activities. Collaboration with Group Leaders and assigned Project Managers, in an effort to track and manage associated budgets and schedules, is considered an important element of the job. Interaction with project team members and customer contacts is expected. Depending upon project or assignment scope, the Controls Engineer is expected to provide technical direction to the manufacturing and purchasing departments. 

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Technical Responsibility: Assume technical responsibility for all assigned elements of controls system design. Interface with the project team to ensure optimum and proper system application. Deliver accurate and timely documentation. Ensure all designs meet applicable codes and standards for safety, format, convention, and customer requirements. To prepare design support documentation, conduct performance and control system design calculations and maintain concise engineering records. To define sub-system design specifications and where appropriate software requirements and interface control specifications, which meet the customer's requirements from the system level specification. Provide stand alone control system specifications for subcontracts which reflect the customer's requirements.
  • Customer & Project Team Communications: Interface with customer and project team members in a timely and professional manner and strive to meet all internal and external expectations. Work closely with production to ensure proper application and integration of all mechanical system components. Establish complete interface of control systems with customer facilities and negotiate details of these connections with customer staff(s). Define robust conceptual and detail control system designs and supporting performance predictions and models to satisfy the customer's requirements.
  • Engineering Budget & Schedule Management: Assume responsibility for adherence to budget and schedule for assigned project elements. Collaborate with group leaders, project managers and project team members to ensure adherence to budget & schedule, and promptly notify management of any deviation from plan. 
  • Supplier and Purchasing Department Interface: Develop technical specifications to allow for competitive bidding on key controls system components. Communicate with suppliers to ensure appropriate technical application and capability of components and subsystems to be purchased for assigned projects. Provide technical support and direction to purchasing agents during the purchase process. Participate in scope definition for any subcontractor efforts used to accomplish these tasks. Provide filed oversight of subcontractors efforts to verify successful completion of tasks.
  • Sales and Service Department Support: Provides technical concepts and cost estimates as needed to support sales and marketing efforts. Supports customer needs in a timely and professional manner. Demonstrate appropriate sense of urgency and understanding of customer service support. 
  • Corporate Initiatives Support: Internal and external support of Petersen’s corporate image, initiatives, and business plans—through positive interaction with the management team.
General Responsibilities: 
  • Perform work in a manner, which meets all product, Quality System, and Employee Manual requirements 
  • Perform work in a manner which ensures the safety of personnel, the public, and the environment. 
  • Perform work in a manner which is in compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements. 
  • Participate in applicable corrective and preventive actions. 
  • Initiate requests for nonconforming material review and disposition. 
  • Initiate requests for corrective or preventative actions. 
  • Stop performing any work that is not in compliance with all product and Quality System requirements until the noncompliance is resolved. 
  • Notify any employee of potential violations in meeting product, Quality System or Employee Manual requirements. 
  • Take any action necessary to meet customer requirements as long as such actions do not violate the company’s Quality System or Employee Manual requirements.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • 3- 5 years of experience in the control system design and development field.  
  • Willing to support multi-million dollar control system projects from design through field installation and commissioning. 
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills. 
  • Multi-tasking (ability to organize and conduct several tasks concurrently) 
  • Must be computer literate and proficient using Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project software programs (previous E plan experience is a plus). 
  • Be a self-motivated, self-starter with creative vision and the ability to work in a team environment.
Education: 
Bachelors Degree required. Related background in respective engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, hydraulics, power systems, etc.) beneficial.


Essential Mental Functions:
Must be a self-starter and work under minimum supervision, with high degree of flexibility in day to day assignments.  Good project management skills.  Demonstrate effective problem solving skills and decision-making mentality.  Effectively and cooperatively deal with vendors and suppliers.   Must be able to communicate professionally with all levels of the organization, and react favorably and in the company's best interest in all situations.  Requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Essential Physical Functions:
Be able to work odd hours and /or schedules, as required.   Must Sit for extended periods of time while at a desk or in meetings; hearing and visual acuity within normal range; manual dexterity to operate keyboard and calculator sufficient to perform essential tasks. Have the ability to frequently lifting and carrying up to 5 pounds, with occasional lifting up to 20 pounds. 

Safety Requirements:
  • Must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others
  • Must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the employer's safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.

Equipment Used (but not limited to):
While performing essential job functions you will be required to use the following; General office equipment, i.e. Computers and Related Software, Copy Machine, Fax Machine, etc.
Facility related test equipment, i.e. DVOM, Light and Sound Meters, Dranetz Meter, Data Loggers, Anemometers, etc.

Availability:
  • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as determined in the employer's sole discretion.
  • Must be available and willing to work overtime as the employer determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.

Travel:
Must be available and willing to travel as the employer determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.

Working Conditions:
Typically includes frequent travel between existing facilities. While performing essential job functions you are frequently exposed to both outdoor and indoor environmental extremes. On a day to day basis you will be exposed to noisy manufacturing shop environments, and typical office environments. May be required sit, stand, and walk for extended period of time.
