The primary purpose and function of the Relief Veterinarian is to provide preventative care, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of Pets. Essential responsibilities include ensuring the safety of pets, clients, and associates by using safe restraining techniques and maintaining clean treatment areas; obtaining relevant client and pet information and maintaining medical records; educating clients about preventative care, pet health needs, diagnoses, treatments, and hospital services; providing professional and efficient service including prescribing and administering preventative care and treating diseases and injuries; communicating diagnosis and treatment plans to the veterinary team and clients; ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal laws including controlled substance inventory; following state guidelines for veterinary assistants and technicians; and other assigned duties. Hiring qualifications include ability to multi-task, strong communication and organizational skills, surgical skills, problem-solving, client service, intellectual ability, compassion for pet care, mathematical and computer skills, management ability, and positive attitudes such as initiative, integrity, cooperativeness, flexibility, independence, and stress tolerance. Special working conditions include confidence around various pets, potential for more than 40 hours per week including weekends and evenings, ability to perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and exposure to pets and certain hazards. Education and experience required include a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent, a license in good standing with the state veterinary board, and a DEA license.
