Compression Coordinator- Vascular RN

Position Summary

The Vascular Nurse / Compression Syndrome Coordinator is a registered nurse who combines full-scope vascular nursing care with dedicated coordination of the compression syndrome care pathway for patients evaluated or treated for median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS), superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS), nutcracker syndrome, and May-Thurner syndrome. Working under a supervising physician and closely with the rest of the vascular surgery team, this RN serves as the central point of contact for compression syndrome patients from initial referral through diagnostic work-up, procedural or surgical intervention, and post-treatment follow-up, keeping studies on schedule and the chart complete so the care team can make timely decisions. Outside of the compression syndrome pathway, this RN also provides direct nursing care — telephone triage, wound care, clinic assistance, and patient education — to the clinic's broader vascular surgery patient panel. This role fits an RN who is organized and steady, comfortable moving between hands-on clinical care and detailed case coordination, and who can remain a reliable, reassuring contact for patients working through a complex evaluation.

Essential Responsibilities — Compression Syndrome Coordination

• Serve as the primary point of contact for patients referred for suspected or confirmed compression syndromes, guiding each patient from referral through work-up, treatment, and follow-up.
• Review incoming referrals and clinical records, flag urgent cases, and route patients to the appropriate physician.
• Schedule and sequence diagnostic studies, including duplex ultrasound, CT or MR angiography and venography, laboratory studies, and catheter-based venography with intravascular ultrasound, in coordination with imaging and vascular lab teams.
• Obtain outside records, imaging discs, and reports from referring providers and outside facilities.
• Maintain the compression syndrome patient tracking board, monitor each patient's stage of work-up, track outstanding results, and flag stalled cases to keep the work-up timeline on track.
• Coordinate case review among the clinic's physicians, communicate treatment recommendations to referring providers, and serve as a resource on referral criteria and the clinic's compression syndrome services.
• Submit and track prior authorizations and peer-to-peer reviews for imaging and procedures, and document medical necessity in coordination with the clinical team.
• Draft visit documentation in real time during compression syndrome clinic.
• Prepare after-visit summaries, orders, and follow-up instructions, and support clinic flow, including rooming and vital signs, during clinic sessions.
• Provide patient education on diagnosis, treatment options, procedural expectations, and post-procedure care in plain language, using approved materials.
• Prepare pre-procedure packets and clearance letters and coordinate scheduling with the adjacent surgery center.
• Coordinate post-treatment follow-up, including surveillance imaging, anticoagulation follow-up, and symptom-recurrence checks.
• Support accurate CPT and ICD-10 capture for clinic visits and vascular procedures.
• Track clinic metrics such as time to diagnosis, time to treatment, and authorization turnaround, support quality-improvement reporting, and keep the clinic's written procedures for the compression syndrome pathway current.

Essential Responsibilities — Vascular Nursing

• Perform telephone triage and clinical assessment of symptoms for the general vascular surgery patient panel, applying standing orders and nursing protocols, and escalating urgent findings to the physician.
• Perform and document wound assessments, dressing changes, and post-operative wound checks for vascular surgery patients, including suture and staple removal.
• Coordinate anticoagulation management for vascular patients, including INR monitoring, dose adjustments per protocol, and patient education on anticoagulant therapy.
• Fit and educate patients on compression garments and wraps, and provide instruction on home compression therapy for venous and lymphatic conditions.
• Assist physicians with in-office vascular procedures (e.g., sclerotherapy, ambulatory phlebectomy, wound debridement) and point-of-care vascular testing such as ankle-brachial index (ABI) studies.
• Provide chronic disease management support for the broader vascular patient population, including diabetic foot checks, smoking-cessation counseling, and vascular risk-factor education.
• Document clinical encounters in real time as a scribe during general vascular clinic visits and compression syndrome clinic sessions, accurately capturing physician findings, assessments, and plans.
• Escalate clinical red flags — such as suspected acute deep vein thrombosis, new limb swelling or discoloration, intolerance of oral intake, acute limb ischemia, or gross hematuria — to the providers immediately per practice protocol.

Required Qualifications

• Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license.
• Current BLS certification.
• Working knowledge of vascular anatomy and diagnostic imaging, or a demonstrated ability to build that knowledge on the job.
• Experience with insurance prior authorization processes and payer communication for imaging and procedural services.
• Proficiency with electronic health record systems and patient-tracking tools.
• Demonstrated ability to manage an active panel of concurrent patient cases and competing deadlines.
• Clear verbal and written communication, including the ability to translate clinical information into plain language for patients and coordinate across provider groups.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two or more years of patient-facing outpatient clinical experience, including direct nursing care and care-coordination responsibility.
• Prior experience coordinating care for vascular compression syndrome patients.
• Cardiology, vascular surgery, or interventional radiology clinic experience.
• athenaOne experience.
• Certified Case Manager (CCM) or similar care-coordination credential.
• Wound care certification (e.g., CWON, CWCN).
• Familiarity with vascular lab studies, including duplex and intravascular ultrasound.

Working Conditions

Primarily an outpatient clinical office environment combining direct patient care with phone- and EHR-based coordination work. Requires standing, walking, and assisting with procedures and patient transfers as part of routine nursing duties, along with regular use of the EHR for documentation and case tracking. May require occasional presence in hospital or procedural settings to support care transitions, and periodic travel between affiliated clinic sites. Standard business hours, Monday through Friday, with occasional availability needed to address urgent clinical, scheduling, or authorization issues.

Work Environment

This position is a clinical position and will report to the office Monday- Friday from 6:30 am – 5:00 PM. 

Physical Requirements

This position requires full range of body motion.
