Job Description

The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (ODAFF) is seeking a full-time Meat Inspector in the Food Safety Division. This position (PIN #04000333) is in state government and will be required to work throughout Oklahoma with primary counties being Marshall and Murray.

The hourly pay for this position is up to $25.07 based on education and experience.

Basic Purpose/Position Description: This position is responsible for performing inspections at meat and poultry plants in Oklahoma to ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws, rules and regulations.

Typical Functions:

  • Quickly identify abnormalities in food animals prior to and after slaughter
  • Recognize and identify actual and potential food safety hazards in the meat-processing environment
  • Perform agriculture inspections at meat processing establishments
  • Complete and submit reports and documents
  • Collect, package and ship samples

Level Descriptor: This is the basic level of this job family where employees are assigned responsibilities, which primarily involve inspecting, sampling and investigating facilities or individuals regulated by the Food Safety Division.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities: Requirements at this level include knowledge of procedures for inspecting, evaluating and grading various agricultural commodities; of state and USDA regulations governing the standards and transport of applicable agricultural products; of federal and state laws regarding packaging, labeling and other standards related to agricultural products; of environmental and sanitation standards; of materials and equipment used in the applicable agricultural industry; of various types of animal and plant diseases; of record keeping; of basic mathematics including percentages; and of English usage.

Ability is required to conduct inspections related to agricultural products, services, and facilities to determine compliance with established standards, laws and regulations; to follow complex oral and written instructions; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to attend to several matters simultaneously; to operate and maintain monitoring and detection equipment; and to apply research methodologies.

Education and Experience: Requirements at this level consist of a bachelor’s degree in an agricultural, biological, plant, animal, physical or natural science, food technology, or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; or the completion of a two-year meat science program.

Physical Demands and Work Environment: This position may require travel to multiple locations within Oklahoma on a daily basis; working conditions may be in extremely hot or cold environments while working in areas that require handling sharp tools and equipment.

Additional Information:

Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license to fulfill all job-related travel including some overnight travel for out-of-state meetings.  Applicant is expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner that represents the State of Oklahoma at all times. 

This position is subject to a twelve-month probationary period.
