Primary Function:
Long Wave Inc. is seeking a Data Author to develop, structure, modify, and maintain technical publication content supporting Department of Defense (DoD) programs. The Data Author will create and revise S1000D data modules and associated technical content used in Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs), NATOPS/NATIP publications, technical manuals, and other technical data products. This position will develop new content from engineering source data and modify existing data modules to incorporate engineering changes, configuration updates, customer comments, and source data revisions.
The position works closely with Engineering, Product Lifecycle Management, Curriculum, Program Management, and other stakeholders to ensure publication content is technically accurate, traceable to approved source data, configuration controlled, and compliant with contractual, customer, S1000D, and applicable DoD and Navy technical publication requirements.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Develop, author, revise, and maintain S1000D data modules and structured technical publication content for IETMs and NATOPS/NATIP
- Analyze engineering source data.
- Create new technical content for system operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, servicing, removal and installation, inspection, limitations, warnings, cautions, and other applicable procedures.
- Modify existing data modules and publication content to incorporate engineering changes.
- Apply S1000D requirements including appropriate data module structure, information codes, applicability, metadata, references, and project-specific business rules.
- Use EAGLE, Arbortext, and other XML-based structured authoring and Common Source Database (CSDB) tools.
- Ensure authored content complies with applicable Business Rules Exchange (BREX).
- Maintain traceability between technical publication content and applicable engineering source data.
- Coordinate with Engineering and other subject matter experts.
- Work with Graphic Artists to identify illustration requirements.
- Participate in peer reviews, technical reviews, validation and verification activities.
- Support publication configuration and change control.
- Identify technical data quality issues, source data deficiencies.
- Support development and maintenance of authoring standards, templates, style guidance, and Technical Publications processes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Work Conditions:
Employee will be working within an office environment. Employee may be expected to travel on occasion to locations where specific PPE or attire is necessary.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Technical Communication, Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
- 1+ years of professional experience in technical publications, technical data development, structured authoring, or a related field.
- Experience interpreting engineering source data and translating technical information into clear, accurate operational or maintenance content.
- Experience with XML-based structured authoring.
- Strong written communication, attention to detail, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- US Citizenship and eligibility for a DoD Security Clearance is required.
Preferred Requirements:
- Experience supporting DoD aerospace, aviation, training system, or other complex defense programs.
- Experience developing Navy IETMs and NATOPS/NATIP publications.
- Experience developing new technical publication content from aircraft or system engineering source data.
- Hands-on experience developing and modifying S1000D data modules within an EAGLE-based CSDB.
- Experience with technical publication validation and verification activities.
- Familiarity with publication configuration and change control processes.
- Familiarity with MIL-STD and Navy technical publication requirements.
- Familiarity with Earned Value Management (EVM) and working within cost and schedule-controlled DoD programs.
- Experience supporting AS9100 or equivalent Quality Management System requirements.
- Active DoD Secret clearance or higher is preferred.

- This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.
