Student Worker - America Reads Tutor

POSITION SUMMARY: 

America Reads Tutors work with children aged prekindergarten through sixth grade in the development of basic reading skills. Children receiving tutoring perform below their expected academic level. Tutors collaborate with school staff and faculty to better assess the children’s needs and to determine effective ways to address those needs. Tutors engage in academic activities with selected children on a one-on-one basis and occasionally in small groups. To ensure progress, tutors work with the same children frequently and consistently (i.e. two or more times per week) in at least 30-minute tutoring sessions. This allows tutors to build a mentoring relationship with the child, which leads to sharing the joy of learning, thus increasing the child's motivation to learn.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Tutors must commit to work at least one semester and are encouraged to stay longer if possible. Consistent, ongoing support is necessary for the children  and teachers with whom we work. All tutors are expected to honor the term of their commitment, and must give two weeks written notification to both the school and the college before terminating employment.
• Tutors are required to complete an initial school training arranged by the college
• Tutors must provide their own transportation.
• Unexcused and excessive absences or unsatisfactory performances will be grounds for dismissal.

Some computer skills are desired for creating or downloading teaching materials or games.
