POSITION TITLE: Elementary Physical Education Teacher

LOCATION: Olathe Public Schools

HOURS OF WORK: 8 Hours Daily

STATUS: Certified – Contract

POSITION SUMMARY: This position instructs students in a classroom which could include students with educational risk factors, as well as students with special needs.  The ability to form relationships with a wide variety of students and families is essential.  Differentiating instruction for a wide range of developmental needs is required. The teacher must understand students with significant needs and behaviors and how to program for them.  The teacher is responsible for the implementation of the district curriculum in a way that maximizes student learning.  The teacher is responsible for the supervision and evaluation of all students within his/her teaching.

Primary Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Plan, develop, and implement standards-based physical education instruction aligned with district and state curriculum requirements. 
  • Teach fundamental movement skills, physical fitness concepts, sports skills, cooperative games, and lifetime wellness activities appropriate to elementary-aged students. 
  • Create a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment that promotes physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development. 
  • Assess student progress and maintain accurate records of student performance, participation, and achievement. 
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs, abilities, and accommodations of all students. 
  • Establish and maintain effective classroom management and behavior expectations in physical education settings. 
  • Ensure the safe use, maintenance, and inventory of physical education equipment and facilities. 
  • Communicate regularly with parents, guardians, and school staff regarding student progress and program activities. 
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education staff, counselors, nurses, and administrators to support student success. 
  • Promote healthy lifestyles, fitness, nutrition awareness, and lifelong physical activity. 
  • Supervise students during instructional activities, transitions, and other assigned duties. 
  • Organize and support school-wide wellness initiatives, fitness events, field days, and other physical activity programs as assigned. 
  • Participate in professional development activities, staff meetings, and district committees. 
  • Follow district policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Other duties as assigned.  

Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrate and teach physical skills and activities. 
  • Monitor student safety during all physical activities. 
  • Adapt lessons and activities for students with varying abilities and needs. 
  • Use assessment data to guide instruction and improve student outcomes. 
  • Foster positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues. 
  • Support the school's educational mission and goals.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time throughout the workday. 
  • Ability to demonstrate physical education activities, exercises, sports skills, and movement patterns. 
  • Ability to run, jump, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, stretch, climb, and participate in a variety of physical activities. 
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation. 
  • Ability to move and set up physical education equipment, including mats, goals, nets, and other instructional materials.  
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and temperatures. 
  • Ability to visually monitor student activities across large indoor and outdoor spaces and identify potential safety concerns. 
  • Ability to hear and communicate effectively with students, staff, and families in various instructional settings, including noisy environments. 
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to student injuries, emergencies, behavioral concerns, and safety situations. 
  • Ability to maintain stamina and mobility necessary to actively supervise and engage students throughout the school day.

Physical Requirements:

Qualifications: 
Physical Education or Elementary Education (K-9)* or Elementary Education (K-6)* or Elementary Education Unified (K-6) Salary commensurate with education and experience.
