Overview



We are seeking a full-time Software Engineering Team Leader on our Sensor Platform Team at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role you will be responsible for leading a team of software engineers who evaluate, bring up, and support sensing and audio hardware solutions and infrastructure around them. You will collaborate with many product teams across Garmin as your team develops features that will be used in wearables, handhelds, cycling computers, marine products, and automotive devices.

Essential Functions

  • Lead and develop a team of low-level software engineers responsible for sensor and audio platforms 
  • Collaborate with product and technology teams to develop and prioritize the team’s roadmap 
  • Enable the team to own and execute on reusable embedded sensor and audio platform capabilities 
  • Coach engineers through technical decisions, design and code reviews, problem solving, and career development 
  • Coordinate and participate in generating software requirements and designs in accordance with Garmin's software development methodology 
  • Engage with vendors and collaborate with them to provide the necessary HW and SW solutions to meet Garmin's needs now and in the future 
  • Evaluate design tradeoffs across low-level software and hardware as they relate to power consumption, cost, reliability, and time to market 
  • Partner with product teams and different engineering disciplines to recommend, integrate, and deliver sensor solutions 
  • Work with human resources to address employee relations issues as needed including writing and conducting annual performance evaluations 
  • Ensure the team meets overall development goals in accordance with the product development plan or market requirements and ensure project milestones are met 
  • Directly supervise software team members at multiple levels by setting the tone for the team environment and providing individualized coaching, training and mentoring 
  • Participate in recruiting activities, interview, hire, train, and evaluate performance for the team 

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Math, Physics or related field AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR a minimum of 10 years relevant experience 
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule) 
  • Must possess detailed knowledge of and experience with C and/or C++ including the ability to review code changes and provide constructive feedback 
  • Demonstrated ability and experience managing and/or mentoring software engineers 
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills 
  • Ability to move effectively between people leadership, technical discussions, and product support requests  
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new technical domains 

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with embedded software and its interaction with hardware 
  • Low-power sensors, audio, or drivers in embedded platforms 
  • Developing or supporting reusable technologies across multiple products 
  • Automated testing, data analysis, or scripting with Python
