SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for Emergency Disaster Services Training, Compliance and Disaster Response throughout The Salvation Army Western Division which includes the states of Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Support the Emergency Disaster Service department in over 100 Nebraska, South Dakota, and Iowa communities.
  •  Provides in-person and virtual training to volunteers and staff. The training material will be EDS-specific.
  • Disaster response responsibilities include supplies, equipment, volunteers, training, and other resources needed to accomplish the response task.  
  • Responds to emergency and disaster incidents as directed, including requests for assistance from fire departments, law enforcement, emergency management agencies, and other partner organizations.
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with local, county, state, and federal emergency management agencies, Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), first responders, and other community partners involved in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.
  • Assist the EDS Director with the Divisional Emergency Plan, provides best practices and current trends in in disaster services, response, and operational procedures.  
  • Collaborate with Volunteer Services to engage EDS volunteers by offering additional training and meetings.
  • Responsible to maintain WST Database maintenance for disaster equipment, including mobile canteens, kitchens, generators, and other major equipment.
  • Assist the EDS Director with statistical information received from responses and prepares reports for local and Territorial Headquarters when requested.
  • Contacts THQ disaster services to provide updates and secure support as directed.
  • This role may be required to attend meetings and special events outside of normal working hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • This role may require response and deployment to disasters at the local, divisional, territorial, and national levels outside of normal working hours to include weekends and holidays. Disaster deployments may require travel away from the employee’s normal work location for periods of up to 14 days.  Deployment assignments will be based on operational needs and the employee’s completion of required training and demonstrated readiness for situational disaster response.
  • Driving is an essential function of this position. This position must be able and willing to operate Salvation Army vehicles of various sizes, including Emergency Disaster Services canteens/mobile feeding units, as required for training, preparedness activities, and disaster responses.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

 

Education and/or Experience: Three or more years’ experience in an Emergency Management or Disaster Response role to include training.  Bachelor’s degree in emergency management is preferred.

 

Qualifications:  The requirements below represent the minimal knowledge, skill, and/or ability required for this position.

  • Ability to be flexible and able to work on multiple projects or tasks simultaneously
  • Intermediate Microsoft Word and Excel skills and the ability to access data systems via a web-based system.
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of Emergency Management principles.
  • Administrative skills, including using standard office equipment, data entry, attention to detail, and filing.
  • Good written and spoken communication skills and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Experience with providing training to adult individuals or large groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters
  • Attention to detail and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Strong independent judgment.
  • Strong sense of urgency.

 

Other Qualifications: Must pass all applicable background checks. You must possess a valid driver's license from the state in which you reside.  Must be approved through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:  Must complete Safe from Harm training within 90 days of hire, as established by The Salvation Army and FEMA IC Certificates ICS.100, ICS.200, ICS.700 and ICS.800 are required with preferred ICS.300 and ICS.400 and State of Nebraska Basic Certification, Capstone preferred.

Work Environment:  The work environment characteristics described here represent those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.   While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and high, precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be loud.  NOTE:  While performing the duties of this job during disaster response, the employee is regularly exposed to dangerous or precarious situations, including moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electric shock, and loud noises.
